Position Highlights

The candidate will be responsible for managing the J-1 exchange visitor program in compliance with the Exchange Visitor Program regulations administered by the Department of State. The J-1 exchange program provides a valuable opportunity for international visiting researchers and professors to enhance university research and academic programs.

The IFS immigration advisor works directly with the university sponsoring departments regarding U.S. visa categories, program requirements, documents required, and other necessary steps to bring foreign exchange visitors to the United States.

The candidate will manage immigration document processing, issuance, and authorizations for departments, international scholars, and professors.

The candidate will coordinate J-1 scholars advising, orientation, training, communication, events, and resources.

The candidate must be detail-oriented, organized, able to manage multiple projects, process faculty caseloads, and have strong presentation skills.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Day-to-day oversight of IFS J-1 program.
  • Review sponsoring department cases/requests for J-1 initials, J-1 transfers, and continuing J-1 scholars.
  • Review prospective scholar's eligibility for the J-1 program, including documents, program duties, and financial proof calculations.
  • Utilizes Sunapsis (MyGlobal) case management software to prepare J-1 records and program in SEVIS.
  • Maintain compliance with documents for the J-1 program.
  • Create and maintain updated J-1 Pre-Arrival packet and orientation materials.
  • Present orientation to new and continuing scholars, and sponsoring departments.
  • Assist sponsoring departments with immigration questions and documents needed for J-1 scholars.
  • Address scholars' inquiries and provide immigration advising and compliance.
  • Provide scholars with travel authorizations and resource support.
  • Assist, reply to inquiries, and maintain Fulbright records on Sunapsis and spreadsheet.
  • Setting up and updating reports related to the J-1 program including cases and financials.
  • Place IFS office supplies orders and schedule printer maintenance when needed.
  • Answer office phone and emails when needed.
  • Maintains presence at Arizona International and required UA events.
  • Collaborate with RO and other AROs to ensure consistent protocol regarding policies and procedures.
  • Assist IFS staff with special and/or variable projects and programs as needed.
  • Provide department and office administrative assistance.

  • Ability to navigate and understand complex immigration regulations.
  • Aptitude for issue spotting and resolving complex immigration problems.
  • Ability to make decisions independently and confidently.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills
  • Detail-oriented and demonstrated ability to prioritize.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5 years' experience
  • Federal regulations require that the Immigration Advisor be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident for certification as Designated School Official approved by Department of Homeland Security
