Job Summary:

Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center is a residential facility operated by the University of Wisconsin-Extension and located in pristine forests along the beautiful Wisconsin River, two miles north of Wisconsin Dells. Upham Woods provides hands-on, field-based education and recreation opportunities to youth, youth leaders, and adults through programs focused on environmental and leadership education. The Center, officially accredited through the American Camp Association (ACA), consists of 14 buildings including a new welcome center, full-service kitchen and dining hall, nature center, and lodging for visitors and seasonal staff. The Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center seeks a reliable and detail-oriented Buildings and Grounds Maintenance Technician responsible for:
- Utilizing equipment to repair and maintain buildings, equipment, and facility property to prevent further damage and ensure optimal operation.
- Assisting in the development of and executing the preventative maintenance program for each building.
- Inspecting contracted work during and after repairs have been completed, ensuring proper and timely completion.
- Proactively engages in identifying and resolving safety issues befitting a residential outdoor education center.

A successful background check will be required prior to employment.

Responsibilities: Inspects, maintains, and repairs basic equipment and facilities to ensure property meets established standards and to prevent further damage. Assists with construction, and operational maintenance as needed.
  • 80% Utilizes equipment to repair and maintain standard machinery, equipment, and facility property to prevent further damage and ensure optimal operation
  • 5% Performs routine facility inspections and monitors cleanliness
  • 5% Troubleshoots, escalates, and documents issues according to established policies and procedures
  • 5% Receives, inspects, inventories, and distributes deliveries to appropriate entities under general supervision
  • 5% Assists trades, crafts, vendors, and technical staff with construction, design, and operational maintenance as needed

Education:

Required

Qualifications:

Required:
- 2 or more years of progressively responsible experience in facilities maintenance.
- Be able to read and follow work instructions and schedules, warning signs and instructions for equipment operations.
- Have knowledge and ability to recognize and implement safety procedures as required, including precautions in use of caustic and toxic chemicals, methods of lifting heavy objects and wearing of safe work clothing.
- Have physical strength and stamina to perform required work -including ability to bend, stoop, kneel, move furniture and work on feet for long periods of time.
- Be able to properly lift 50 pounds repeatedly and more with help.
- Must be courteous with staff, clients and the public.
- Ability to work well alone and with others during unsupervised periods.
- Must have good oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to identify priorities .
- Ability to work effectively with supervision and as part of a team.
- Drivers License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards.

Preferred:
- Pesticide Applicator Certification.
- Chainsaw Safety Certification.
- Other certifications applicable to building and grounds maintenance.

Work Schedule:

The work schedule is flexible. It can be between 6 AM to 8 AM and working from 8 hours from there. There will be occasional weekends or calls in on a weekend or evening to fix something.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Minimum $25.00 HOURLY
Depending on Qualifications
Work hours may include nights and weekends. Compensatory time for hours worked is preferred, however, overtime may be an option based on budget and workload.

Additional Information:

This position may be required to work occasional nights and weekends to meet the program needs and priorities of the communities served.
