Position Summary:

The Area Director in the Department of Residence Life is part of the administrative leadership of the residence life program that serves ~3000 students in ten residence halls. The Area Director position is a 12-month, full-time, live-off position reporting to the Assistant/Associate Director of Residence Life. This position has responsibilities related to Residence Life supervision of student and shared supervision of professional staff, student conduct, camps and conferences, creation of marketing initiatives for the department, and serving on the occupancy team for Residence Life. The position will involve some night and weekend commitments. With the responsibility of supervision of several residence halls, there is a requirement to live locally.

This is a full-time position offering excellent benefits and paid leave. Salary begins at $48,000 per year.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the day-to-day activities of students and professional staff and assist with the personnel management allocation plan including hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation.
  • Serves as a main point of contact for resident support providing mediation and resolution of personal and facility issues.
  • Coordinates overall departmental marketing initiatives including publications, social media, and departmental give-aways.
  • Serves as department's liaison with Office of Admissions and Recruitment, Welcome Center events, and day-to-day tour operations for the residence halls.
  • Directs the overall management and operation of assigned residence halls.
  • Serves as hearing officer for initial and second offense conduct issues from perspective halls.
  • Coordinate technology training for departmental staff at all levels, in collaboration with appropriate network administrators (Canvas, Maxient, StarRez, etc.)
  • Directs the administrative aspects of the Summer Camps and Conferences program.
  • Works closely with the Assistant Resident Directors and Senior Assistants in community development planning and implementation.
  • Serves as a resource regarding hall issues and concerns, departmental policies, procedures, facilities, and referral regarding university departments and services, and participates in residence hall on-call rotation.
  • Coordinates emergency response procedures (e.g. medical/personal concerns, fire alarms, threatening weather situations, and urgent maintenance needs).
  • Assists with departmental administrative policy and procedures development, interpretation, and implementation.

What You'll Need to Succeed:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Three or more years of full-time, progressively responsible experience in areas related to residence life in a university residential setting or equivalent
  • Supervisory experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work with various members of the institution, including faculty, senior leadership, and students
  • A demonstrated commitment of working with racially and socioeconomically diverse students
  • Attention to detail
