Join Berkeley Lab's dynamic team as we seek a visionary Lead Mechanical Engineer to spearhead the engineering marvels behind our groundbreaking scientific construction projects. In this role, you'll be orchestrating innovation and precision. The primary job duties will include planning and translating initial scientific requirements into engineering designs and applying core project management functions.

This position weaves together science and engineering to bring cutting-edge experiments to life. You'll be at the forefront, guiding and inspiring a team towards excellence, while ensuring that every bolt and beam aligns perfectly with our scientific aspirations.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead cross-functional project teams, managing day-to-day operations and serving as the primary internal point of contact.
  • Develop detailed designs for scientific equipment, utilizing CAD and FEA tools, and oversee engineering designs for experimental equipment integration.
  • Lead procurement, fabrication, construction, assembly, and pre-installation efforts.
  • Manage technical integration of subsystems, identify requirements, interfaces, and risks.
  • Collaborate with procurement teams on acquisition planning and execution.
  • Develop and oversee project timelines, budgets, and financial forecasts.
  • Coordinate presentations and technical reviews.
  • Ensure work safety and adherence to safe practices, coordinating with EHS and management.
  • Implement quality assurance and conduct of operations principles.
  • Recruit, hire, and manage staff.
  • Contribute to conference presentations and publications.

What is Required:

  • This role typically requires 8 years of experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 6 years with a Master's degree, or equivalent. An advanced degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field is ideal.
  • Demonstrated expertise in designing and constructing scientific hardware and leading smaller engineering teams.
  • Proven ability to present conceptual and finalized designs through reviews and documentation.
  • Proficient in CAD and other engineering tools, with the ability to interpret technical drawings.
  • Experience in estimating project costs, generating schedules, and tracking progress.
  • Familiarity with project management tools and methods.
  • Proven project management skills.
  • Proficient in engineering CAD and analysis tools.
  • Strong written and oral communication abilities for technical reports and publications.
  • Experienced in multidisciplinary teamwork, advanced problem-solving, and independent decision-making.
  • Excellent collaboration skills with engineering and scientific teams, external partners, and LBNL management.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Expertise in detectors, telescopes, particle accelerators, beamlines, or similar large-scale scientific equipment.
  • Ph.D. in Engineering or Physics with extensive experience in scientific construction projects.
  • Proficient in systems engineering, QA engineering, and Project Life Cycle Management Systems.
  • Relevant experience in measurement and precision alignment processes.
  • Built extensive connections and reputation within the global scientific community in detectors, telescopes, particle accelerators, beamlines, and related large-scale projects.

Salary:

The full salary range of this position is between $136,476.00 to $230,316.00 annually and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $153,552.00 to $187,656.00 annually depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2-year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
