Principal Enterprise Architect, AI & Data Science

This is a hybrid position in Milwaukee. Will require 3 days (M, T, and W) onsite each week.

What's the role?

Northwestern Mutual has been actively leveraging generative AI to evolve its business. This is part of an ongoing digital transformation and we are looking for a talented individual to keep incorporating AI into our target state architecture and supporting the experimentation responsibly and sustainably.

This role is for a Principal Enterprise Architect to work closely with our data science team and incorporate AI into our architecture and processes. This is a high-impact role across NM's Technology organization, working with engineering leaders to implement our technology modernization strategy.

What you'll do:

  • Lead technical discussions enabling solutions powered by data science, AI including Generative AI.
  • Define aspects of NM's target state architecture supporting AI and data science activities from testing to production.
  • Guide teams via the definition and recommendation patterns for implementation of data science, AI including Generative AI solutions both in-house and based on 3rd party solutions.
  • Provide thought leadership on AI and data science technology and architecture to leaders across the enterprise and ensure that the AI & data science is aligned with Northwestern Mutual's business and technology strategies.
  • Evangelize the defined strategy and communicate to delivery teams to realize it.
  • Evaluate new technologies to identify new opportunities and continuously adjust enterprise guidance.
  • Mentor and coach junior architects and technical professionals.
  • Ensure Technology Architecture meets financial, compliance, security, and risk goals.

What we're looking for:

  • Bachelor's in Computer Science / Computer Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 9-14 years of professional experience required.
  • 8-10+ years of experience leading teams as an architect or engineer lead.
  • Experience with data science, AI, Generative AI implementations from prototyping to production.
  • Experience leading architecture transformation.
  • Experience with design and implementation of large, complex enterprise systems over an extended period of time.
  • Experience with LLM applications, vector databases, and MLOps practices.
  • Familiarity with the AI landscape including the tools and technologies, AI platforms, frameworks, and best practices for AI solutions.
  • Previous leadership of large-scale enterprise technology planning and implementation.
  • Recognized thought leader in their organization in both current and legacy technologies.
  • Ability to influence across a large organization at both the engineering and leadership levels.
  • Ability to collaborate and provide leadership in a large group of engineering leads and be accountable for driving efforts towards defined outcomes that align with business strategic goals.
  • Understanding of EA methodologies (e.g. TOGAF 9).

Compensation Range:

Pay Range - Start:

$146,440.00

Pay Range - End:

$271,960.00

Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Positions in certain locations (such as California) may provide an increase on the standard pay structure based on the location.
