Job Description

Summary:

As a member of our team the Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) collectively Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will work directly with the clinical faculty other APP team members and house staff to provide neurocritical patient care in our closed dedicated state-of-the-art 18-bed Neurocritical Care Unit. The successful applicant will also assist in the teaching of neurology and neurosurgery residents as well as other house staff medical students and APP students.

Responsibilities:

All work is performed under the supervision of a physician but requires judgement and interpretation to complete.


Expected to take histories and perform physical exams formulate differential diagnoses and develop plans including ordering and interpreting laboratory and radiology tests consulting other specialties and determining of a course of action for patient care which may include ordering of medications and other interventions.


Presents on rounds with an attending physician.


Manages both routine and critical situations.


Performs procedures including central line placement arterial line placement lumbar punctures and tracheal intubations once appropriately trained.


Attends and occasionally presents at educational conferences on the unit.


Participates in research projects performed on the unit.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:


Graduation from an accredited APP program and eligibility to practice as an APP in the state of Rhode Island is required.


Current registration as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in the State of Rhode Island.


Good interpersonal skills in order to deal effectively with patients their families nursing personnel and providers from other services.


Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.


EXPERIENCE:


Experience and/or training in a clinically intensive atmosphere (inpatient or emergency) preferably in the area of neurocritical care or in related areas of medical or surgical critical care neurology neurosurgery emergency medicine or inpatient medicine is preferred.


TRAINING:


Up to three months on-the-job training and experience to become familiar with the subject material job responsibilities and work routines will be provided.


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


This is a high-intensity position in a critical care environment. May experience mental/visual fatigue from job pressures.


INDEPENDENT ACTION:


Performs independently within the department's policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to the supervisor when clarification of the departmental policies and procedures are required.

None.
