Job Description

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develops, plans, coordinates and implements in-service and continuing education programs and activities.
  • Develops programs that meet the individualized needs of the staff and the performance expectations of the department.
  • Works with the Specialty Coordinators to ensure specialty specific learning needs are addressed. Coordinates activities, individualized learning need analysis, goal establishment and consistent communication and counseling of the staff.
  • Communicates and collaborates with the Clinical Nurse Specialist to develop and enhance approaches and concepts in continuing education.
  • Serves as consultant to staff in order to provide support and resources for problem-resolution.
  • Responsible for promoting high quality care through the implementation of various roll integration. Creates, implements and oversees cross-training activities. Provides ongoing evaluation of role expertise in collaboration with the Coordinators, Managers and Clinical Nurse Specialist.
  • Coordinates and documents organization of a didactic and clinical program. Provides education sessions specific to each role in preparation of certification exam.
  • Develops and monitors preceptor education program and staff in conjunction with Orientation Liaison and Clinical Nurse Specialist. Evaluates the teaching strategies of staff preceptors and supports them in this role.
  • Assists management in the development of team relationships in Surgery. Facilitates positive communication throughout the department.
  • Responsible for Clinical Practice Development Model (CPDM) coaching within Surgery. Educates physicians, students and ancillary personnel and acts as a role model to staff in order to advocate compliance to hospital department Standards of Practice.


Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the team member practices, and
  • Certified Nurse Operating Room(CNOR) certification issued by the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI).


Education Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.


Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 5 years of experience in in surgery, that includes experience in med nurse, scrub and circulate.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Excellent communication skills and problem-solving ability.
  • Must demonstrate self-direction for professional autonomy and accountability.
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) or similar products.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Must have functional speech, hearing, and senses to allow effective communication.
  • Will be exposed to blood and body fluids, fumes, and chemical hazards. Protective clothing must be worn as necessary.
  • Generally exposed to a normal office environment.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
