Job Summary:

The Associate Director reports to the Child Development Lab Director and serves as a backup in the Director's absence. The Associate Director is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations including staff scheduling, providing leadership in designated project management tasks, assists with budget development and oversight, assists with purchasing, payments, and tuition account billing, ensures licensing and accreditation standards are consistently met, regularly assists with reviewing and writing new and updated policies and procedures to align with current standards. The Associate Director assists with the coordination of daily operational needs of the CDL program, and program and scheduling needs of outside stakeholders such as research. The Associate Director supervises float teachers and student hourly employees. The Associate Director provides tours and enrolls new families, assists with program communication and family activities. The Associate Director actively contributes to the decisions of the Administrative Team and assists the CDL Director to meet the CDL's overall strategic goals, mission, and vision.

This position is responsible for staff scheduling which includes arranging for staffing coverage when staff call off. This may occur during nights and weekends. Additionally, this position may be required to attend professional development trainings and/or other CDL community wide events that may occur on nights or weekend.

Responsibilities: Assists with budget and curriculum development and teaching policy for one or multiple early childhood education facilities to ensure safety and compliance and foster an environment of learning and development. Directs operations, supervises staff, and monitors licensing and accreditation compliance.
  • 20% Assists with the development and implementation of early childhood curriculums, professional development, and operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives
  • 10% Governs tuition account activity, monitors financial reports, and distributes and processes invoices to clients and vendors
  • 5% Implements and supervises the operations of special programming and events
  • 10% Serves as a liaison and fosters communication between internal and external stakeholders to provide clear and consistent information
  • 15% Monitors licensing, accreditation documentation, and other required program reports according to established rules and regulations
  • 15% Supervises the day-to-day activities of early childhood education staff to ensure the safety and physical well-being of children in a specified child care facility
  • 10% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 5% Relays effective and pertinent communication to internal and external stakeholders from unit leadership regarding current program and site activities
  • 5% Assists in developing and auditing the unit budget
  • 5% Manages special projects that support program development and align with strategic goals and overall mission and vision

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree
Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or another field related to working with children and families. For related Degrees, must have a minimum of 36 credits in Early Childhood Education and meet requirements to be level 14 on the Wisconsin Registry.

Preferred
Master's Degree
Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or another field related to working with children and families.

Qualifications:

Required:
- 4 or more years of experience in an early childhood group center, elementary school, administration or professional work environment related to early childhood development
- 2 years minimum supervisory and leadership experience
- Must successfully complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check prior to employment, with an annual criminal background check completed thereafter

Preferred:
- Experience with relationship and inquiry-based curriculum, Creative Curriculum and/or outdoor nature-based philosophies
- Experience with State Licensing, City of Madison Accreditation and/or National Accreditation
- Experience managing a program
- A working knowledge of business-related practices such as budget development and project management
- Training and experience using positive guidance practices such as from Pyramid Model and/or Conscious Discipline
- Experience working with a diverse population
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office programs as well as management/scheduling software

The starting annual base salary for this position is listed as $59,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Additional Information:

The mission of the UW Child Development Lab is three-fold: 1) to facilitate and assist faculty and students in conducting scholarly research; 2) to prepare the next generation of early childhood professionals by offering opportunities for UW students to intern, volunteer, and observe in the CDL; and 3) to provide high quality early education programs for children and engage with the community to improve the lives of children and families. The UW Child Development Lab offers a year-round early care and education program for children from six weeks to five years of age. The CDL provides developmentally and culturally-appropriate early learning experiences for children in safe, relationship-based classrooms. Each of our classrooms is staffed with highly-trained lead teachers that provide guidance and mentorship to interns, assistant teachers, and volunteers. CDL staff model best teaching and learning practices based on research and contemporary theories of child development. An integral component of our developmental curriculum is learning through inquiry and outdoor nature based education. The CDL has 3 observation rooms for college students and researchers to utilize for naturalistic observation of child development for teaching and learning purposes. Researchers utilize the CDL to conduct a wide range of research studies and also to train their research assistants on their research protocols.

Hours for this position have a default schedule for a standard work week. Some weeks, hours may vary depending on center operational needs and CDL scheduled events and can include some evening and weekend work.
