Job Summary:

The Sign Language Lab at the University of Wisconsin - Madison seeks a Research Coordinator to join the lab with an approximate start date of August 24, 2024. The lab is broadly interested in sign language documentation, specifically local sign languages from Guatemala, and language acquisition and socialization in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English in early elementary classrooms in the United States.

The Research Coordinator will support the technical and administrative needs of the lab. This is a part-time position subject to the availability of funds. The position is ideal for candidates interested in sign language research who are seeking to build skills and explore research interests prior to applying to selective PhD programs and will provide dedicated mentorship and professional development including opportunities for co-authorship, conference presentations, and independent research.

Responsibilities: Supports the development, design, and implementation of research projects according to plans, under the general direction of faculty and/or senior research personnel, following established protocols and guidelines to support and advance research in a given field under general supervision.
  • 40% Assists with conducting experiments or interviews, collecting and analyzing data, and documenting results according to established protocols
  • 15% Assists in composing and organizing research reports and manuscripts to provide updates on unit objectives
  • 5% Schedules logistics and secures resources for research supplies, equipment, and facilities
  • 5% Tracks supply and equipment inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 15% Maintains organization of research records according to established policies and procedures
  • 5% Assists with management of external datasets and coordination with partner institutions
  • 10% Assists with coding and annotation of video data, participant recruitment and communication in English and American Sign Language (ASL)
  • 5% Assists with supervision and training of undergraduate research assistants
Tasks:
  • Helping establish and maintain the lab's data analysis pipelines
  • Writing, submitting, and updating research protocols with the Institutional Review Board
  • Assisting with management of external datasets and coordination with other institutions
  • Assisting with lab research projects, including management and organization of video datasets, recruitment and data collection
  • Training and supervising undergraduate research assistants
  • Other administrative tasks, including purchasing equipment, updating the lab website, coordinating schedules for weekly lab meetings

Education:

Preferred:
Bachelor's degree in linguistics, cognitive science, psychology, computer science, or a related field.

Qualifications:

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Basic proficiency or experience with American Sign Language (ASL)
2. Must be able to work and communicate effectively with individuals from different cultures and backgrounds, especially individuals who are Deaf or hard of hearing
3. Experience working with video annotation, specifically use of Elan Linguistic Annotator
4. Experience working with behavioral or linguistic datasets

Preferred Experience:
1. Advanced fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
2. Prior experience working with the Deaf community
3. Experience working with human subjects research, including families and children
4. Experience with basic statistical analysis using R

Work Schedule:

The work schedule is flexible and will be determined at the time of hire.

Work Type:

Part Time: 58%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal, 13 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding.

Salary:

Minimum $17.55 HOURLY
Depending on Qualifications
The typical starting salary for this position is $17.55 to $25.05 depending on qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $17.55 to $32.55.

Additional Information:

There is a possibility this position can be extended if there is a need and available funding.
