Description

GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

*Starting wage of $20 per hour for candidates with Child Care certifications listed below

Under the direction of the Before and After School Care & Camp Director, and in accordance with the Association policies set forth by the YMCA of Greater Waukesha County, the Before and After School Care & Camp Specialist will be responsible for the supervision and engagement of youth enrolled in Before and After School Care (Y BASE) and Camp programs. The programs include Y BASE, Camp, 4K Wrap, and School's Out Fun Day (SOFD) held in local schools and in Y facilities. This is a year-round position that transitions to a day camp counselor during the summer.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Support the creation and implementation of developmentally appropriate lesson plans and activities in YBASE, 4K Wrap, Camp, and SOFD programs, including following and suggesting activities. Collaborate with 4K Lead Teachers, Y BASE Site Supervisors, and other department team members.
  2. Actively engage and fully participate in the daily activities of children including supervision of groups of children (ages 4-13, varied group sizes); keeping children within sight and sound, positively guiding children's behaviors, preventing harm, and always ensuring safety in a direct service role.
  3. Work collaboratively with others and independently with groups of children.
  4. During the summer months fulfill the role and responsibilities of a camp counselor.
  5. Follow directions and directives of supervisor and fulfills needs of department as assigned and as necessary, to include being scheduled multiple sites as needed.
  6. Maintain a clean and well-organized work and program space at all times while ensuring safety of equipment and supplies; ensure learning environments are positive and developmentally appropriate for the children and families served.
  7. Develop positive relationships and communication will the staff, families, and children while providing motivational support and guidance and resolving complaints in a professional, courteous, and patient manner.
  8. Support professional collaboration with local school district administration and staff to develop programming that aligns with district values, policies, and procedures.
  9. Communicate professionally and in a timely manner with supervisor, colleagues, parents, and children in positive ways supporting department.
  10. Uphold the core values of the YMCA when working with people within the YMCA facilities and community.
  11. Maintain participant records and other documentation in accordance with department requirements.
  12. Follow the YMCA of Greater Waukesha County's emergency procedures to ensure the safety of all children, including but not limited to, communicating with supervisor regarding any emergency concerns or situations.
  13. Adhere to all relevant regulations and quality expectations from the YMCA, Department of Children and Families, Young Star, or other regulatory agencies.
  14. Attend all staff meetings and training courses as required; maintain current training and certification requirements.
  15. Other duties as necessary and as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Must be at least 18 years of age and have and have 240 hours of experience in an approved education setting.
  2. Must have completed high school or equivalent.
  3. Must meet all school age licensing requirements including the completion of at least one course in school-age growth and development (credit or non-credit) within 2 months of hire.
  4. Must be able and willing to obtain CPR, First Aid, AED, Abusive Head Trauma, Mandated Reporter, Wisconsin Registry certification, and additional non-credit coursework (as needed).
  5. Must have a sincere interest and ability to comprehend needs and develop positive outcomes in children from diverse populations.
  6. Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with others.
  7. Ability to relate effectively with diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  8. Must have the ability to travel to multiple sites in a workday.
  9. Strong oral and written communication skills are required.
  10. Exhibit the core values of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility in all aspects of their work with the YMCA.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 lbs. and work indoors and outdoors; must be able to assume postures in low levels to allow physical and visual contact with children; see and hear well enough to keep children safe; and engage in physical activity with children. Must be physically, mentally, and emotionally able to provide responsible care for all children independently and with other employees.
