Job Description
Summary:

The Staff Psychiatrist admits and attends psychiatric patients in all levels of care under the clinical supervision of the medical director. Provides clinical leadership and ensures the clinical staff receives appropriate clinical supervision and assures quality patient care.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:


Provide clinical leadership through the interdisciplinary staffing process

  • Attend staffings daily, or as required by each program.
  • Assure appropriate length of stay (clinical care) and appropriate aftercare plans are in place.
  • In-service staff under the direction of the medical directors.
  • Under the supervision of the medical director, ensure the clinical staff receives appropriate clinical supervision and direction.
  • Conduct concurrent and retrospective insurance reviews on patients and evaluations of the quality of patient care through patient care audit procedures.


Ensure all Hospital patients receive appropriate evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, medical screening and medical/psychiatric evaluation

  • Provide direct psychiatric services as outlined by medical staff bylaws.
  • Comply with all state and regulatory mandates regarding medical record documentation and timeliness.
  • Account to the medical director for the quality and efficiency of patient care rendered to patients at the Hospital.


Assure care is well coordinated with payers, case managers, referring clinicians, outpatient psychiatrist, and family support systems

  • Communicate directly with referring psychiatrist and involved medical physicians and psychiatric aftercare providers.
  • Assure clinical team is coordinating care with all involved parties, i.e. family, support system, medical providers, county agencies, etc.
  • Advocate for lengths of stay that are clinically necessary to assure ongoing recovery.
  • Conduct utilization management, peer reviews, and appeals with payers that facilitates patient advocacy and captures opportunities for future managed care referrals.
  • Participate in family/support system development that assures patient recovery after discharge.


Under the supervision of the medical directors, actively participate in improving the quality of the care offered to patients at Rogers Behavioral Health

  • Participate in the quality improvement committees as appropriate.
  • Attend in-services related to the improvement of care.


Demonstrate understanding of Joint Commission and other regulatory agency compliance regulations

  • Involve self in the learning and application of standards relevant to the medical staff.
  • Participate in in-services/seminars and other meetings to increase involvement and awareness of regulations.
  • Involve self in the education of other disciplines regarding the medical staff.

Participate in Hospital committees, meetings and team projects

Assist in the recruitment process

  • Identify, support, and participate in physician recruitment activities.
  • Be accessible to potential recruits of the Hospital.


Participate in the Quality & Risk Management Program

  • Apply the Quality & Risk Management model to the medical staff functions.
  • Participate in and/or create Quality & Risk Management teams that lead to improvement in other Hospital areas.
  • Educate and involve employees in the Hospital's and medical staff's Quality & Risk Management plans.
  • Actively participate in the culture of patient care initiatives.


Participate in the Hospital's marketing plan

  • Support a department customer service/public relations plan.
  • Interact with the marketing manager to communicate customer-related issues.
  • Participate in the customer feedback process, when necessary.
  • Speak with referring clinicians.

Physical/Mental Demands:

  • Excellent communication skills are required to understand and relate to department managers, Hospital medical and clinical staff, the Hospital President and Governing Board of Directors.
  • Ability to understand and communicate using medical/psychiatric terminology.
  • Excellent writing skills are needed to prepare reports.
  • Ability to use initiative and judgment to organize, plan activities, formulate policies, delegate responsibility, and make decisions affecting diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Ability to relate to people in a manner to win their confidence and establish rapport.
  • Flexibility to adjust to changing conditions, programs and various details of the position.
  • Verbal and hearing ability to interact with patients and employees. Numerical ability is required to maintain records and operate a computer.
  • Ability to read and communicate through written, verbal and auditory skills and abilities.
  • Position requires walking, sitting and standing. Work is performed inside the building and is physically light. Lifting is moderate; must be capable of lifting a minimum of 20 pounds. Reaching, handling, grasping, and manual dexterity are necessary to operate various pieces of office equipment.
  • Physical/Mental ability to perform job duties are verified by a physical exam by a licensed physician, per post-employment physical.


Education/Training Requirements:

  • Medical Doctor, licensed by the State of Wisconsin.
  • Board certified or board eligible psychiatrist.
