POSITION SUMMARY

A Senior Level Manufacturing position responsible for leading the execution of production activities for a specific stage of construction (SOC) in our new shipbuilding construction process. The Area Manager will be responsible and accountable for cost, productivity and schedule performance in their assigned SOC. The Area Manager will be supported by middle and front line supervision from multiple trades. An Area Manager will have responsibility for between 100-300 production employees on a daily basis.

This position involves frequent, regular interaction with Manufacturing Senior Leadership team; their direct Supervisory team, union personnel, and Human Resources. The Area Manager will provide regular status reports, performance metrics and updates on their continuous improvement process efforts to Senior Leadership Team (SLT).

This position involves regular contact with our customer inspection teams, ABS and SUPSHIP inspection teams related to compliance with requirements, quality of work and adherence to schedule. This position may require interfaces with system/equipment suppliers.

This position will have direct supervision of the manufacturing team consisting of General Foremen and front line Foremen. The Area Manager will carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with MMC's policies and applicable state and federal laws. Supervisory responsibilities will include assigning and directing work; appraising performance; addressing employee and customer/employee complaints and problem resolution.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Responsibilities include:
    • Overall Safety, Cost and Schedule Performance in their assigned SOC
    • Builds trust and unit cohesion through, honesty, fairness and respect. Be a strong servant leader to the General Foremen and Foremen reporting to them
    • Evaluating skill sets and determine training needs necessary to grow the General Foremen, Foremen and SOC workforce competence
    • Maintaining strict discipline and adherence to Safety and Security policies
    • Enforcing all company policies and work rules
    • Following all company Work Instructions and (SOP) Standard Operation Procedures
    • Drives LEAN Manufacturing and 5S Principles to improve productivity and performance
  • Safety:
    • Complete incident investigations in a timely manner.
    • Lead their SOC safety team in completion of JSA's, SOP's and work place inspections to ensure safe work environment.
    • Lead by example in areas such as safety and 5S.
    • Ensure policies and procedures are followed by hourly staff.
    • Lead their SOC in projects to improve Area safety.
    • Request training for their hourly staff that improves safety and/or performance.
    • Ensure that action items are tracked to closure in a timely manner.
    • Aid in development of new policies and procedures.
    • Promote safety vision statement and responsibilities of staff.
    • Successful completion of Supervisory Safety Leadership training to include the following: Incident Investigations, Inspections and Interactive Audits, Hazard Awareness, JSA Development and any other EHS training pertaining to the department and/or position.
  • Duties include:
    • Assess progress on production orders and schedules to plan and allocate area resources within their SOC.
    • Plans production operations, establish priorities and sequences for manufacturing products with their SOC.
    • Prepare operational schedules and coordinate manufacturing activities (trades) to ensure production and quality of products meet customer specifications.
    • Review production reports and resolve manufacturing problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays.
    • Develop or revise standard working processes/practices and observe workers to ensure compliance with standards.
    • Compile, store, and retrieve manufacturing data related to quality, cost and schedule for their SOC.
    • Monitors Safety, Productivity, Schedule and Cost performance on a daily basis
    • Challenges General Foremen and Foremen, sets clear performance goals, objectives and expectations. Holds supervisors responsible and accountable for their SOC's performance
    • Clears obstacles that are adversely effecting performance, productivity and cost
    • Monitors and reports out on performance metrics to the Directors and Senior Leadership Team (SLT)
    • Works with Planning in production control projects to sequence work more effectively
    • Plans overtime for the SOC and works with General Foremen to assign the resources to support
    • Completes Safety Observations periodically, assures subordinates meet the goal
    • Understands and works within, CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) works closely with the SOC supervision to assure a uniform understanding
    • Resolve disputes, misunderstandings, enforces policy and disciplines as appropriate
    • Or other duties, as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to understand the business process, apply resources, assess progress and react in a timely manner to any variations in the process. The responsibilities listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to successfully perform in this position.

In addition, the Area Manager must have the ability to write reports, interpret business correspondence and procedure manuals, effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers and the general work force. The Area Manager must have the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists and have the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
