Summary: To direct the shift operating crews in the Power & Pulp Department in order to maintain a safe, reliable, cost-effective supply of the plant utilities (i.e. water, steam, electrical, chemicals and air) and pulp supply to allow the mill to effectively operate and manufacture corrugating medium board.

Education: BS in Engineering, Pulp and Paper Sciences, or Process Engineering or License as a First-Class Operator per National Institute for the Uniform Licensing of Power Engineers. Education experience may be waived depending on individual's years of experience in industry.

Work Experience: 3-5 years of experience in pulp, power/recovery, or paper process industry.

Skills: Must be proficient in communication skills. Must perform consistently and effectively under pressure. Must be able to deal effectively in conflict resolution. If educational requirements have been waived, previous experience is required in area (i.e. power/recovery or power and pulp).

Training: Dependent on background of applicant.

Essential Functions: The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to...

  • Observe and direct the day-to-day operations of the following: woodroom and refuse fuel handling, digester and pulp washing, steam and electrical generation, chemical recovery, evaporation and cooking liquor make-up, hydroelectric generation, general process water and compressed air utilities.
  • Act as a leader facilitating and directing the operating work force in the performance of their jobs to ensure proper operation of department equipment and process to maintain health, safety and environmental standards within the department and to maintain a cost-effective reliable operation.
  • Analyze and report on shift production data-identifying critical process and maintenance issues which must be resolved in order for the mill to achieve health, safety, environmental and production goals.
  • Review assigned work force to ensure that they have the proper skills/tools to perform their jobs.
  • Coordinate and communicate the department's activities with the rest of the operation of the mill.
  • Communicate mill objectives to the work force.
  • Encourage volunteer involvement for constant improvement.
  • Participate in and organize special project assignments.
  • Set direction for shift maintenance crews assigned to area.
  • Maintain discipline in department.
