The Associate General Counsel works in close collaboration with the Vice President, General Counsel and other university attorneys to provide legal advice and counsel to a broad group of university leaders and stakeholders. This advice and counsel cover a wide range of complex university legal issues, leveraging advanced legal expertise and knowledge.

The Associate General Counsel's responsibilities will focus on certain areas of expertise as work is allocated across the Office of General Counsel (OGC), but may include any area of higher education legal practice, including (but not limited to): sponsored research; faculty governance; employment law and labor relations; student organizations and conduct; academic clinic operations; corporate governance; real estate; litigation management; intercollegiate athletics; contract drafting and review; institutional policies/procedures, departmental or program issues, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provides legal advice (written and oral) and counsel to university leaders, faculty, and staff regarding a wide range of university business matters, including those that are highly complex and novel.

2. Conducts thorough legal research, fact-gathering, and analysis, and provides legal, ethical, mission-based, and policy advice on one or many complex, higher education legal areas.

3. Drafts, reviews, and negotiates policies and procedures, contracts, agreements, regulatory filings, and other university documents with legal implications

4. Assists in the investigation and preparation for litigation matters in cooperation with other internal and external counsel.

5. Oversees the work of outside counsel to ensure effective utilization of university resources

6. Provides legal representation for the university and its employees in various university business matters before federal and state administrative agencies

7. Creates and delivers presentations, training, and support materials to inform and educate university employees and leaders on current and emerging legal issues.

8. Represents the Office of General Counsel through active participation on task forces, committees, and other working teams that advance the mission and strategy of the university.

9. Partners with public affairs, title IX, risk management, and other government-relations/compliance entities within the university to early identify emerging state or federal legislation or regulatory actions that may require legal interpretation and/or proactive counsel to the institution.

10. Perform other duties as requested.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must have a Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and be a current member in good standing of the Wisconsin Bar or another state's bar and ability to become licensed in the State of Wisconsin within 6 months of hire.

A minimum of seven year's experience.

Proven track record of providing high quality counsel on a broad array of legal matters including highly complex and novel issues.

Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to clearly articulate complicated information; active listening to uncover nuances.

Demonstrated skills developing strong partnerships across an organization; ability to work in a highly collaborative environment with diverse stakeholders.

Advanced legal research and analysis skills to inform advice; creative problem solving and ability to effectively manage ambiguity.

Ability to manage and prioritize work effectively and independently.

Intellectual curiosity and a continuous improvement mindset to seek out and apply best practices - for self and the overall unit.

Motivated to assume a significant level of responsibility and to confidently represent the university's interests to internal and external parties.

Ability to represent and promote the University's mission and guiding values.

Demonstrated professionalism to work effectively with officials and executives in government, business, and educational organizations.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Experience in multi-lawyer college or university Office of General Counsel.
