Job Summary:

The Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture (DPLA) seeks a dynamic professional to join our team as a Teaching Assistant Professor. We are looking for a committed teacher/educator who is dedicated to promoting the full inclusion and participation of our diverse, multidisciplinary student body.

This position will teach 18 credits over the course of the 12-month appointment. The 18 credits will combine studios of four-credits, with three-credit classes, (e.g., generally 2 studios per semester or 3 lecture courses per semester, or 1-2 studios in the fall and spring, and 1-2 three-credit summer courses, etc. as needed). The courses will be a combination of Landscape Architecture studio classes, undergraduate classes in the Landscape and Urban Studies program, and graduate classes in the MS in Landscape Architecture and/or the MS or PhD in Urban and Regional Planning programs.

DPLA faculty expertise and interests include urban planning and design, land use policy, ecological restoration, and community food systems and health, resilience, and sustainability. We offer an undergraduate certificate in Collaborative Integrated Design, we support the joint UW-Madison/UW- Milwaukee undergraduate certificate in Architecture, and we offer two undergraduate degrees, a Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board-accredited BLA and a BS/BA in Landscape and Urban Studies; two master's degrees: a Planning Accreditation Board-accredited MS-URPL and a research- based MSLA with an option for ecological restoration specialization; and a PhD in Urban and Regional Planning. Responsibilities: Designs and facilitates classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction within an academic discipline to ensure quality delivery of instruction and integration of content within an academic work unit. Provides for-credit instruction in formats such as classroom, online and/or laboratory settings, including grading. Serves as an instructor of record.
  • 20% Develops and designs curriculum and instructional material relevant to a course of instruction
  • 5% Advises students on academic and career direction within a specific field of study
  • 40% Facilitates classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including assessment of student performance
  • 5% May supervises student employees involved in development or delivery of instruction
  • 5% Collaborates with department faculty and staff to develop teaching strategies relevant to the discipline
  • 5% Contributes to the development of teaching and learning scholarly work including publications and presentations
  • 10% Contributes to the strategic development of curriculum and academic content through various mediums to ensure the integrity of the educational mission of the work unit
  • 10% Manages degree programs and/or certificates, develops and collaborates with implementing high impact events and programming

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience working as an educator in general education settings.
- Significant experience in site design, and demonstrable enthusiasm, understanding, and competency with Landscape Architecture design principles and methods.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Accredited MS, or PhD in City, Urban, and/or Regional Planning, or closely related discipline.
- Two or more semesters of recent experience teaching introductory to advanced college level courses and studios in Landscape Architecture or a closely related field.
- Significant experience with studio-based courses and instruction about the use and application of digital design tools for site design, analysis, planting, and visual communication.
- Excellent technical capabilities.
- Licensure in Landscape Architecture.
- Experience with curriculum development and evaluation.
- Experience with program management generally or managing academic programs.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
