Job Description

The Department of Pathology at Gundersen Health System, La Crosse, Wisconsin, is seeking a full-time BC/BE anatomic and clinical pathologist. The ideal candidate will have broad surgical pathology and cytopathology diagnostic skills. The candidate should also possess superior communication skills and be comfortable in leadership roles.

Gundersen Health System is a multispecialty group practice that serves southwest Wisconsin, northeast Iowa and southeast Minnesota. The medical center's La Crosse campus is a tertiary referral center, a certified cancer center, and a level II trauma and emergency facility. Gundersen Health System is also complemented by a robust medical foundation that leads and directs several ACGME-accredited medical and surgical residency and fellowship training programs that also supports research endeavors of interested medical staff members pursuing academic interests.

All surgical pathology and cytopathology diagnostic services currently provided by the pathologists at Gundersen Health System reside in the central core laboratory location in La Crosse.

  • Annual pathology volumes currently include:
    • Over 38,000 surgical cases
    • 11,000 Paps
    • 1,500 non-gynecologic cytology specimens
    • There is no autopsy service
    • Our PAs gross all surgicals
    • Call is currently 1:9

We offer a compensation package that is competitive to that of private/partnership practices, but with more stability and less risk of contract turnover due to mergers/acquisitions. We also offer a competitive benefit and loan forgiveness package. Gundersen Health System is a non-profit entity that qualifies for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

La Crosse is a beautiful city nestled among the bluffs of the Mississippi River. Its metropolitan area has a population of over 100,000 and offers safe neighborhoods, excellent schools, affordable housing, and many cultural activities. Three colleges and universities in La Crosse bring the vibrance and vigor of a college town. The river and surrounding hills and bluffs provide ample recreational diversions for cyclists, runners, hikers, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts. A relaxed atmosphere and high degree of collegiality is found throughout the community and among the pathologists and laboratory staff in particular.

Must have completed an accredited graduate medical training program and be board certified or eligible within the area of medicine stated. In addition, must have or be able to obtain a license to practice in our multi-state region with no restrictions or limitations. Medical staff in our system will supervise advanced practice clinicians. Medical staff may need to provide outreach service as part of their role in the system. Teaching students, residents, fellows or clinical staff is cornerstone to our Medical Education philosophy and an expectation of all medical staff.
