Summary

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI)'s Regulation & Certification Department is currently seeking a Certification Test Team (CTT) Engineer for the Emission Certification & Compliance Team at our Superior Township, MI facility just east of Ann Arbor.

HATCI's Certification & Compliance Team helps support Hyundai and Kia vehicles meeting the challenging environmental, and emissions standards at the federal, state, and local levels, through certification & in-use testing. Certification & Compliance professionals are responsible for vehicle testing, analyzing emission results, determining emission trends, and presenting to team management.

The Engineer will be responsible for scheduling and coordinating testing with the HATCI vehicle emission lab, testing could involve outside facilities. Testing will primarily include emissions & fuel economy for in-use compliance (IUVP), and Certification (EDV, FEDV, EVAP, DDV). Testing may include mileage accumulation, coastdown, special driving pattern arrangements, and other emissions-related items. The CTT Engineer should have knowledge of emission & fuel economy testing procedures or be capable of quickly becoming educated regarding such procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for scheduling emissions & fuel economy testing for the Certification and Compliance Team.
  • Help develop and maintain test processes to ensure proper execution of official EPA and CARB testing. Proactively follow up on all issues related to this topic.
  • The CTT Engineer will review emissions & fuel economy data, perform routine analysis of the data, determine that all test procedural requirements are met by the testing entities regardless of whether they are in-house, or outside contractors.
  • Fill out and update required documentation, both in-house and regulatory.
  • Issue reports as required, coordinate decisions regarding additional or repeat testing with the appropriate test requestor(s).
  • Assist with root cause analysis of vehicles/tests related to Certification and Compliance. Prepare and submit engineering reports to management and agencies.
  • Exceptional organization and communication skills, both oral and written, are necessary for this position. Conflict resolution between test requestors and test entities would be another critical factor in this role.
  • The CTT Engineer will be expected to have strong people skills.
  • Travel up to 15% (domestic and international)

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the certification process, including automotive certification testing, automotive engineering principles and operations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of vehicle emissions regulations knowledge, such as CFR 40 Parts 86, 600, and 1066, or a clear understanding of capability necessary to review, interpret, and apply such regulations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of recent rule makings with Tier 4 and ACC2
  • Automotive manufacturing knowledge beneficial
  • Engine system and engine management operation knowledge beneficial
  • Working knowledge of on-board diagnostic system operation, and diesel systems beneficial
  • Working knowledge of HEV / PHEV / BEV would be beneficial.
  • Working knowledge of ETAS (INCA) and/or CAN DB tools would be beneficial.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, high integrity and ethical behavior.

Field Environment or Test Environment

  • Shop Environment - exposure to fuel, compressed air/gas, emissions and exhaust fumes; pinching, tripping, electrical, and chemical hazards; bending and stooping required; must be able to lift up to 75 lbs. and work safely with hand power tools. Safety glasses required.
  • Laboratory Environment - exposure to fuel, compressed air/gas, emissions and exhaust fumes. Pinching, tripping, electrical, and chemical hazards; bending and stooping required. May be exposed to hazardous conditions; must have clear understanding of safety; may have to lift up to 50 lbs. Safety glasses required.
  • May include travel, both domestically and internationally, to attend conferences and technical meetings with government agencies, technical organizations, corporate offices, and affiliates.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Testing and/or automotive laboratory experience beneficial.
  • Valid Driver's License and Satisfactory Driving Record
  • Experience working in culturally diverse team environment beneficial.
