What you will accomplish as an ITS Technician at TAPCO:


The Intelligent Transportation Systems Technician has the technical skills to install, troubleshoot, service and perform maintenance on a variety of solar-powered as well as AC powered safety systems. They possess strong problem-solving skills, including diagnosis of electrical, mechanical, wireless, cellular modems and computer systems. This position will work with contractors to install new devices, train users how to operate them, as well as perform periodic maintenance of all types of Intelligent Transportation Systems and TAPCO Made products. This position will operate in the field, including a large amount of work done roadside, and requires frequent travel throughout the United States. This position reports to the ITS Service Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties listed below may vary in terms of importance and other duties may be added or eliminated as this position develops.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform installation, maintenance and repairs to a wide variety of electronic, computer, communication, network and other systems.
  • Safely operate related tools and equipment.
  • Operate related computer systems and software.
  • Provide technical phone support to customers, contractors, distributors and TAPCO employees.
  • Troubleshoot and repair equipment including diagnosing electronic failures to the board level.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare field reports.
  • Communicate effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, contractors, and customers.
  • Implement and manage software and firmware changes. Installing new software and hardware onto various devices such as PCs and proprietary hardware. Familiarity with configuration and operation of software programs that control products serviced by TAPCO.
  • Travels outside the state of Wisconsin up to 25% of the time.
  • Work autonomously with little to no documentation.
  • Performs other related work as required.
  • Follow all traffic safety rules while performing duties.
  • Follow all company safety rules and 5S procedures.

Required Qualifications

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Good working knowledge of electronic, electromechanical and electrical power principles to include testing of components in DC and AC circuits.
  • Computer knowledge/skills: PC literate (past and current Windows desktop OS, Microsoft Office, uploading and downloading files, software installation, administrative, e-mail & time sheets).
  • Must be proficient in using a computer to configure equipment, including control boards, routers, switches, and other components of an IP network.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Must be able to frequently drive to customer sites, including multi-day overnight travel.
  • Ability to work outside regularly scheduled hours to meet operational needs and to respond to after-hours emergency calls as required.
  • Ability to work on a ladder and operate a bucket truck.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to work in high stress/high visibility environment with minimal supervision.

Required Experience

  • Associates degree in electronics, or consummate on-the-job experience.
  • Two years industry experience in field service and troubleshooting.
