Job Summary:

The Department of Pathobiological Sciences (PBS) in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Wisconsin (UW)-Madison invites applications for an Assistant Professor tenure-track faculty position in the field of Respiratory and Hemorrhagic Fever Viruses.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an independent, extramurally funded, nationally recognized research program. We seek candidates with a research focus on respiratory and hemorrhagic fever viruses of importance to human and animal health. Competitive candidates would offer innovative approaches to make advancements in the field of respiratory and hemorrhagic fever viruses to include the characterization of these viruses in animal models, development and testing of therapeutic countermeasures against these viruses, identifying and exploring host-pathogen interactions, and having the capacity to response to newly emerging viruses.

Given the highly pathogenic nature of many respiratory and hemorrhagic fever viruses, the successful candidate should have experience in and demonstrate independent access to both biosafety level (BSL)-3 agriculture and BSL-4 containment facilities. The ability to obtain and maintain Select Agent clearance (FBI background check, fingerprinting, and annual training) upon and during the appointment is required. In addition, the ability to obtain and maintain various vaccinations, travel reporting requirements and trainings upon and during the appointment is required.

The successful candidate will also be expected to serve as an assistant director at the Influenza Research Institute (IRI) and be responsible for oversight of the Select Agent program, animal research program, and BSL-3 research program specific to the IRI. Responsibility will include working closely with the institutional Research Animal Resources and Compliance program and the Select Agent program within the office of Environment, Health, and Safety to ensure compliance with all Select Agent regulations, training of researchers, and the proper function of the Select Agent registered research spaces as well as compliance with USDA-regulated animal species.

In addition to developing a strong extramurally funded research program, the successful candidate is expected to make significant contributions to departmental and campus professional, undergraduate, and/or graduate teaching programs and to mentor graduate students. Participation in departmental and university service and commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic environment are expected.

There are excellent opportunities for the new faculty member to benefit from existing departmental strengths in infectious disease, which emphasize contemporary and emerging diseases of importance to global human and animal health. The Department of Pathobiological Sciences is one of four departments within the School of Veterinary Medicine and consists of faculty members with expertise in infectious diseases (immunology, parasitology, bacteriology, virology, vector biology, epidemiology, and public health) and comparative pathology (anatomical and clinical). Faculty within the Department and School train graduate students in the Comparative Biomedical Sciences Training Program and other campus graduate programs. They also serve as trainers on a variety of NIH training grants administered through the School and other units on campus. Further, the new faculty member will have access to affiliated research and diagnostic facilities including the School of Medicine and Public Health, Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, Influenza Research Institute, Midwest Center of Excellence for Vector-borne Disease, Global Health Institute, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, USGS National Wildlife Health Center, Wisconsin National Primate Research Center, and Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.
