Position Description:
Position Purpose


Advanced Practice Nurse

Provides primary or specialty health care services within defined scope of practice in collaboration with a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures.

Physician Assistant

Provides primary or specialty medical care within defined scope of practice under the supervision of a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures.

Department Position Purpose

Deliver comprehensive, specialty specific health care to pediatric pulmonary patients as directed by a licensed physician and in accordance with policies and procedures.



Core Responsibilities

  1. Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.
  2. Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  3. Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  4. Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
  5. Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
  6. Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  7. Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  8. Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  9. Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.


Department Specific Responsibilities

  1. Examine, treat and document care of patients with pulmonary disorders who are hospitalized. Patient populations include primarily the children with tracheostomies and/or home ventilators but also other children hospitalized in the PICU, NICU, or general inpatient units.
  2. Over time and with experience, responsibilities will expand to include children who are part of the pulmonary program who are being seen in the EDTC with acute illnesses.
  3. Teach and educate patient families. Instruct medical students, residents and affiliated health professionals (e.g. nurses, respiratory technicians, sleep technicians, referring providers) in a variety of pediatric pulmonary disorders, procedures and therapies.
  4. Participate in quality assurance activities within the Pulmonary division.
  5. Participate in research objectives and activities within the Pulmonary division as appropriate.
  6. Execute administrative duties applicable to the Nurse Practitioner role within the division.
  7. Serve on committees within the DOP, CW, or CSG as pertains to the division or for the benefit of the provider's career goals.


Preferred Schedule:
Full-time role with expectations for coverage during core business hours, night & weekend call, with flexibility to accommodate clinical needs.


Position Requirements:
Minimum Education:

Advanced Practice Nurse

Master's Degree or higher in Nursing

Physician Assistant

Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies

Prior Experience:
Zero years of experience required


Certifications / Licenses (Must be current and maintained)

Advanced Practice Nurse

  • Wisconsin RN license
  • Wisconsin Advance Practice Nurse Prescriber License
  • Certification as Advance Practice Nurse

Physician Assistant

  • Wisconsin PA license
  • Certification by NCCPA
