Position Summary, Requirements, and Qualifications

Overview
The Department of Mathematical Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts and Science is a vibrant, dynamic department that offers programs with a wide range of resources and options to students. Math programs help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The department will interact with virtually every student during their time at Northern Illinois University (NIU).

Position Summary
The Teacher Certification Coordinator has responsibility for organization and administration of the Teacher Certification Program in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. They serve as a liaison with College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and assistance to the Department chair in program administration.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain Accreditation
  • Be proficient in Department, University and State Teacher Certification requirements and assist in development and preparation of program accreditation documents.
  • Evaluate and submit course substitutions meeting NIU program.
  • Serve as liaison for College of Liberal Arts & Sciences on Departmental, College, University committees related to Teacher Certification, and community colleges.
  • Serve as a University supervisor when needed.

Supervise and Evaluate Teaching Students
  • Collaborate with the other coordinator of teacher certification to coordinate and supervise:
    • MATH 401: Clinical School Experience in Mathematics
    • MATH 412: Methods of Instruction in Secondary Mathematics Curriculum
    • MATH 413: Student Teaching in Secondary Mathematics
  • Observe, supervise and evaluate students onsite
  • Work with students, cooperating teachers and university supervisors
  • Plan and conduct seminars
  • Schedule speakers
  • Review portfolios
  • Maintain official files of student observations and reflections

Mentor Students
  • Advise prospective and current students on coursework needed for successful completion of Mathematics Teacher Certification Program and endorsements, during established regular office hours to advise students and potential students.
  • Evaluate transcripts for potential candidates and returning students; design timelines and develop projected schedules for successful completion of program.
  • Maintain official advising and program files for students in the Mathematics Teacher Certification Program.
  • Help recruit students into the program.

Placement of Teaching Interns
  • Advise and assist students in preparation of ILAS 201, ILAS 301 & MATH 401 applications, including proofreading, distributing permits and coordinating placement requests.

Assist Department Chair
  • Assist the Chair of the Mathematical Sciences Department. (generally).

Either of the following:

  • A Masters degree in education or other related fields and at least 5 years of experience in education, social work, or educational advocacy.
OR
  • A Bachelors degree and 6 to 10 years' experience in education, and/or educational advocacy.

  • At least 6 or more years of experience as an EAP Education Advisor and experience working with foster children's education
