Job Summary:

The position plays a vital role supporting clinicians and staff in providing routine and specialized care for exotic pet patients that include but not limited to rabbits, rodents, reptiles, birds, and other animals. The selected candidate will be able to expand their skills in an innovative and exciting environment. The position requires the ability and willingness to collaborate with and interact as part of a team within the Special Species service and all other services in the hospital.

Responsibilities:

Tasks:
  • Responsible for independently and proficiently performing technical nursing responsibilities to provide quality patient care
  • Participates in the instructional needs of the teaching hospital as needed. Participates in the training and mentoring of students, interns, technicians, assistants, and residents
  • Responsible for maintaining equipment and adequate inventory of area supplies and cleanliness of facility
  • Obtain patient history and provide guidance to clients regarding husbandry, patient care, and/or questions regarding appointments, procedures, and surgeries
  • Help aid DVMs in patient appointments, procedures, and surgeries which may include sedation and/or anesthesia
  • Assists in providing accurate estimates to clients and able to answer questions regarding procedures and diagnostics.
  • Ensures charge capture is accurate and reflects patient care provided
  • General cleaning and maintenance for the service
  • Continue to look to gain knowledge to be able to provide quality care for all patients.
  • Continue to gain and seek knowledge opportunities that will benefit self, service, and the hospital
  • Bring a positive, helpful, and collaborative attitude to the unit and hospital. Listens effectively to others and contributes to a positive working environment.
  • Supports/conveys positive, friendly image of the University/hospital and special species service.
  • Follows personal, hospital, and section policies and procedures
  • Promotes emphasis on customer satisfaction and importance of responding courteously and promptly to all internal and external customers
  • Participates in on-call shifts as required by the hospital
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. independently and physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks. Preferred knowledge, certification and working experience with wildlife, zoo, and exotic animal patients and anesthesia.

This position is posted at Vet Tech levels 1, 2 and 3. Level is determined by qualifications based on type of prior veterinary tech experience.

To qualify for Level 1: Entry level, new CVT grad or awaiting to sit for the CVT exam, or some CVT working experience with no specialization.

To qualify for Level 2: Generally over 2 years of veterinary tech experience, may substitute years of experience for specialization.

To qualify for Level 3: Veterinary Tech Specialist (VTS), or highly qualified and specialized in a specific area, may have prior experience from another university hospital.

License/Certification:

Preferred
CVT - Certified Veterinary Technician
If unlicensed, must obtain Wisconsin licensure within your first 12 months of employment with UWVC

Work Schedule:

Hours generally scheduled Monday-Friday, between 7:30AM-5:30PM. Final schedule to be determined based on hospital need and candidate availability.

Potential for additional on-call hours as required by the hospital.

Work Type:

Part Time: 50% - 80%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Minimum $18.00 Maximum $28.00 HOURLY

Sign on bonus of 5% of base pay (based on FTE) to be paid in two installments over first year of employment.
