The QuEST Project (Quantifying Ecosystem exports across Space and Time) seeks applications for Research Scientist 2 position with a focus on data management and project coordination. We are looking for a motivated and organized person with a background in ecology, data analytics, biogeochemistry, and/or hydrology to join our team. This multi-institutional research program spans five states (NM, NV, AL, AR, NH) and seven institutions including collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The project will address hydrologic and biogeochemical change in headwater stream networks. Our approach integrates hydrologic modeling with complementary hydrologic and biogeochemical observations within five watersheds across the United States' cross-continental aridity gradient.

Duties include: Collating and managing data collected by the project including large volumes of high-frequency sensor data and model outputs, analytical chemistry data. Working with project investigators to design and deliver data products to long-term open-access repositories. Training participants to track and quality control the various types of project data. Expertise in environmental sensors, hydrologic modeling, and/or geospatial data is required. Interest in participating in occasional fieldwork is desired.

This position will be based at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM. The position is available as early as January 2024 (flexible) and will be hired on a one-year contract with the expectation of renewal for additional years pending satisfactory performance.

The QuEST Research Scientist will maintain a data management system to collate and organize data (biogeochemical, hydrological, and geospatial data), metadata (field and laboratory), and standards and procedures to assure good coordination across institutions. This may include but is not limited to:

  • Implement the data management plan outlined in the project proposal
  • Facilitate, with others in the project, the (1) tracking of samples and data streams from the multiple sites across the project; (2) collation of data from model simulations, field sites, and lab analyses and implementing QA/QC procedures; (3) security and backups of data; (4) accessibility of fully QA/QC'd data across the project in a timely manner
  • Participate in organizing and teaching data management workshops across the project
  • Facilitate the finalization of data products to be deposited in public repositories
  • Participate in tracking project outputs and products and project reporting

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters in biological sciences, geosciences, hydrology, water resources, data science, or closely related field
  • Previous experience integrating and analyzing multiple types of spatially and temporally extensive data
  • Experience working collaboratively with a team of scientists across multiple institutions
  • Experience with hydrologic modeling and/or environmental sensors
  • Excellent English verbal communication skills
  • Previous experience working with large datasets
  • Experience with programming in R and/or Python, and collaborative version-controlled workflows including Git and/or Jupyter Notebooks
  • Experience with developing data processing pipelines using R and/or Python
