The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking an experienced Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide care for patients requiring neurosurgical interventions including cranial, spine, vascular, functional neurosurgery located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at Children's Hospital.

MCW Department of Neurosurgery will advance the field of neurological surgery through world-class care, groundbreaking research, and innovative education. Our neurosurgeons staff the only two Level One Trauma Centers in southeastern Wisconsin. Orientation may include inpatient and outpatient training at Children's' Hospital and at the CHW clinic locations, working with all attending pediatric neurosurgeons.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.

The Ideal Candidate will be an experienced surgical APP wanting to be part of a thriving and very collaborative academic practice at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). Areas of responsibility will include, but not be limited to providing direct patient care in a clinic and OR setting.

In this role you will,

  • Clinic responsibilities including evaluation of new and follow-up patients and routine postoperative care
  • Working with the RN team regarding outpatient pain and symptom management, medication management, imaging and test result management, and triage.
  • Depending on the applicant's interests and experience the role may include inpatient consultations, rounding and functioning as a surgical assist.

Core Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information
  • Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
  • Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors

Preferred Schedule:
Generally, Monday - Friday Standard Clinical Business Hours; Flexibility with scheduling to support necessary coverage.


Position Requirements:

Preferred Experience: 1+ years of Neurosurgical or Surgical experience

Minimum Education:

Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing
Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies

Minimum Requirements:

Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner Wisconsin Physician Assistant License

Wisconsin RN License Certification by NCCPA

Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License AHA ACLS, AHA BLS, DEA
