The Safety Manager is responsible for Generac's safety programs, compliance, and planning within Wisconsin Engineering Labs. This position would provide benefits to our labs through safety initiatives, understanding and implementation of safety requirements for product testing and test equipment as well as planning for new test needs in the future. This role will require collaboration between core engineering, lab operations, and site EHS. The candidate should be able to communicate effectively, document work, create procedures, and implement best practices for a safe work environment. In addition, work with personnel to maintain a safe and healthy work environment and monitor the facility and processes for adherence to federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines. This position works closely with cross-functional teams throughout the organization.

This position acts independently under the direction of the Lab Operations Manager

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work with site EHS to support SDS/Hazard Communication program.
  • Work with site EHS to support the planning, training, inspection, reporting and recordkeeping requirements for all safety compliance programs.
  • Lead training efforts for Safety related activities throughout the enterprise
  • Works closely with EHS team to identify gaps and propose changes to close gaps.
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures supporting the continuous improvement of the Engineering Lab.
  • Provide engaging health and safety leadership to the facility employees
  • Participate in Employee Safety Committees.
  • Support strategic initiatives designed to produce best in class EHS performance.
  • Act as the facility and regional champion for the Regional Lab Safety program
  • Lead the tracking and assessment of global safety requirements and metrics
  • Advise business group leadership teams on safety deployment progress and challenges
  • Train and Assist site EHS coordinators, managers, supervisors and employees in the development and implementation of long and short-range planning, policies, programs and objectives.
  • Identify safety gaps in product testing, and test equipment and procedures, and drive those improvements.
  • Review the designs of and provide input for use of custom test fixturing and on-off tests.
  • Conduct audits to ensure that consistent, best-in-class results and compliance are followed to enable operational excellence. Prepare reports of findings with recommendations for corrective action.
  • Lead and perform safety audits at regular intervals.
  • Perform Job Safety Analysis of all worksite activities and lead actions for controls and countermeasures.
  • Plan for global implementation of lab safety changes as they are deployed.
  • Perform ergonomic and safety risk assessments virtually or hands-on for product and process capability.
  • Observe workers to determine proper use of prescribed safety equipment and procedures. Train and demonstrate proper use of safety equipment.
  • Manage and maintain laboratory and test cell safety equipment on a regular interval.
  • Work with EHS to investigate incidents (including injuries, property damage, near misses, releases, and losses) to determine root cause and prepares/directs corrective action plans.
  • Acts as regional champion for implementation of risk reduction controls.
  • Collaborate with core engineering teams on future test needs and planning for proper safeguards compliant with applicable regulations.
  • Regular contact with vendors and service providers.
  • Actively seek out necessary laboratory test equipment and facility needs.

Minimal Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience;
  • 5 years of progressive Occupational Safety experience within a manufacturing environment
  • Ability to travel locally up to 30% of the time
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior EHS experience
  • Knowledge of Li-ion battery safe handling and storage methods
  • Knowledge of Lab Quality Management Systems
  • Experience in administrating lab safety protocols across multiple facilities
  • Knowledge of electrical safety standards
  • Proficiency in proper use and application of various hand and power tools
  • Proficiency in use of basic and advanced electrical and mechanical test equipment
  • Knowledge of internal combustion engine assemblies
  • 2 years in fields related to the type of products Generac produces
  • Knowledge of ISO 17025
  • CSP, CIH, or PE Certification;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated understanding of OSHA and local regulations;
  • Proven knowledge of safety regulations and industry standards;
  • Demonstrated ability to influence management, teams and individuals across multiple functions
  • Ability to successfully manage shifting deadlines and priorities in a fast paced environment;
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills; able to train/present to an executive level audience
  • Experience participating in a team-based environment with some project leadership experience.
  • Experience in electrical generation devices and facility requirements.
  • Experience in mechanical or electrical related field.
  • Experience in electrical loading and AC & DC power generation systems.
  • Experience in electrical & mechanical design, componentry, and ability to create and interpret schematics & blueprints.
  • Dedication to a continuous safe work environment.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. The employee frequently is required to use hands to manipulate objects, tools or controls; and talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to walk; stoop; crouch; bend and reach above shoulders. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted and up to 100 pounds with assistance, waist high, up to 10 feet away. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be working in the typical conditions of a manufacturing environment including seasonal variation in temperatures and occasional exposure to manufacturing fumes or by-products. The employee must comply with the assigned location PPE requirements including but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, appropriate gloves, clothing and shields for required tasks and closed toed or safety shoes as required by facility safety policies.
