The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (HSC) Office of Research is seeking an experienced, dynamic, results-oriented professional to join our team as the Clinical Associate Radiation Safety Officer. The UNM health system includes a 500-bed level I trauma hospital, Sandoval Regional Medical Center, various medical clinics, and an NIH-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The University holds the following licenses with the State of New Mexico Environmental Department (NMED), Environmental Protection Division, and Radiation Control Bureau:
* Type A Broad Scope to include Medical Diagnosis, Therapy and Research
* NRC Nuclear Research Reactor License
* Radiological Radiation Permits
The Clinical Associate Radiation Safety Officer is a highly specialized position required by state and federal regulatory authorities. This position works with the Radiation Safety officer to manage the clinical aspects of the Radiation Safety Program at UNM. This position functions as the Associate Radiation Safety Officer (ARSO) for UNM's state issued broad scope human use radioactive materials license as well as consults on other clinically related radioactive material programs (e.g., non-ionizing radiation) for both direct patient care and studies involving human research subjects.
In these capacities, the Clinical Associate Radiation Safety Officer performs duties necessary to ensure the safe clinical use of ionizing, non-ionizing, and laser radiation sources for human use throughout UNM. This position is key to protection of the environment and UNM community, including workforce members, visitors, patients, and human subjects, and oversight of regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities include:
* Assist with patient care duties as a member of the clinical care team;
* Participate in regulatory inspections related to clinical radiation safety and use;
* Evaluate, address, and escalate any issues regarding radioactive materials for human use;
* Assist in developing and conducting training, internal inspections/audits, and documented information related to program requirements;
* Assist with the personnel dosimetry program, radiation dosimetry investigations, and radiation safety education;
* Function as the organizational subject matter expert in radiation safety for workforce members, patients, and emergency response
Bachelor's or graduate degree in physical science or engineering or biological science with a minimum of 20 college credits in physical science; at least 5 years of professional experience in health physics including at least 3 years in applied health physics.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
