Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of the Chief of Urology and TMH Leadership plans organizes and manages the clinical and non-clinical functions of the urology department. Working collaboratively with the Chief and TMH leadership analyzes the financial and operational practices of the department and develops business plans to improve quality of service and patient satisfaction in a cost-effective manner. Functions as liaison between Chief of Urology and managers to communicate and facilitate actions necessary to achieve the Brown Urology and Lifespan goals. Ensures compliance with all hospital departmental and other regulatory agency policies and procedures. Develops and implements Urology*s strategic and tactical plan. Reports to Lifespan leadership at regular intervals regarding clinical quality metrics/outcomes and operational and financial performance of the Division of Urology including Lifespan-based outpatient urology offices.

Responsibilities:

Provides strategic direction and leadership for urology services to achieve clinical care excellence in alignment with Lifespan*s mission and strategy.

Patient Experience and Employee Engagement:

Serves as a role model by continuously demonstrating the corporate values and principles; creating and maintaining effective positive customer service relationships by identifying customers and ensuring that needs are met; managing difficult interpersonal situations appropriately; and educating all staff on the importance of quality customer service.

Effectively and continually communicates with staff management and customers to facilitate the flow of information necessary to the success of the employees department functions and the organization. Encourages employee engagement in their career by providing staff with positive and actionable feedback to maximize the utilization and potential of the organization*s human resources.

Strategic Planning:

Develops and recommends short- and long-term goals for strategic growth and performance of Lifespan inpatient and outpatient urology services and related academic and research activities.

Collaborates with urology and hospital leadership in development of the urology program and service line and its network development including management of the department*s space planning allocation and utilization.

Keeps current regarding trends and developments in the healthcare field particularly regarding strategic planning analytic and decision support tools financial trends evolving technologies and programs.

Develops sources of enduring funding to support the programmatic and academic objectives of the department.

Prepares pro forma statements and business plans as requested.

Management:

Participates in management of urological initiatives; collaborates with physician leaders and other health professionals in monitoring the quality assurance and improvement programs.

Develops systems and reporting mechanisms for physician and staff productivity ensuring the alignment of department operations with the hospital*s mission vision and values.

Prepares variety of narrative reports and statistical and productivity analyses when requested.

Promotes the development of a collaborative service line structure for care delivery.

Develops administrative policies and procedures in conjunction with the departmental leaders. Acts as liaison with senior Lifespan administrative personnel hospital personnel and the community-at-large to coordinate activities resolve issues and implement new systems and programs.

Performs interviewing hiring disciplining performance reviews and transfers of department/division personnel. Works with Lifespan HR to develop effective workforce and assure highest quality service to internal and external stakeholders. Develops and maintains cost-effective staffing models for inpatient and Lifespan-based outpatient services; advises and assists in various human resource matters including the writing of position descriptions requesting position evaluation and ensuring employee performance reviews are completed in a timely fashion.

Participates in the selection installation and management of all information systems applications required to support the department operations.

Works closely with facilities development and facilities management personnel on the design and completion of all significant construction and equipment installation projects in the department.

Collaborates with physician leaders in managing education and research activities of the division of Urology.

Responsible for the strategic planning administration and operation of urologic research activities across The Miriam Hospital Rhode Island Hospital and Newport Hospital

Designs and delivers methodologies and process improvement programs aimed at decreasing variation and eliminating waste to improve healthcare systems provision of services and achieve organizational efficiencies. Provide assessment and program outcome measures.

Financial Operations:

Oversees operational and capital budgets for all areas of responsibility; prepares budget variance reports for areas of responsibility; monitors expenditures and revenues and presents corrective measures to ensure adherence to approved budget; helps with budget development and oversight of educational/academic budgets. Works closely with pertinent nursing management in the development of their operating budgets for the urology inpatient and Lifespan outpatient services as well as management of urological services provided at The Miriam Hospital Rhode Island Hospital and Newport Hospital campuses. Formulates capital budget with Chief.

Develops and implements a system for the effective management control disbursement and variance reporting of research funds.

Monitors departmental and physicians* professional billings. Interfaces with the Lifespan PSO regarding billing and collections.

Hospital Services:

Meets regularly with the Chief of Urology hospital leadership department physician leadership and managers to ensure the smooth efficient and effective operations and patient services.

Develops and maintains relationships with Warren Alpert Medical School and other affiliated programs/hospitals.

Participates as member of various hospital committees and project teams as requested.

Other information:

QUALIFICATIONS-EDUCATION:

Master*s degree in nursing Healthcare Administration or Business Administration required.

QUALIFICATIONS-EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of ten years of progressive management responsibility including staff and business leadership in a professional or academic setting or as a medical practice manager.

Minimum five years of experience in a complex health system with an academic medical center is required.

Demonstrated experience in strategic planning policy development and administrative development and experience in a clinical service of an academic healthcare system or medical practice.

Evidence of systems analysis and project implementation experience.

Hospital administrative management experience preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While most duties are performed in an office environment incumbent is exposed to patient-care environment. Any risk of exposure to contagious or noxious elements is minimized by adherence to safety procedures and protocols.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct supervisory responsibility for up to 10 FTEs; scope of authority includes subordinate staff under direct reports up to 50 (non-physician) FTEs; collaborates with up to 30 physician FTEs.
