Job Description

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

This position works as part of a team within the Space & Propulsion Systems Department. More than 70% of the position entails supporting the department with leading material evaluation projects for systems within the Department of Defense, NASA and their government subcontractors. Examples of materials being evaluated include CMCs, C/C, refractory metals, ablative materials, PMCs, and ceramic materials. The temperature range for testing would consist of cryogenic to ultra-high temperatures. The remaining 30% of the position balances facility and test development to assist others in pushing new technologies in the labs and proposing testing efforts in support of RFP/RFQs.iMust have interest, knowledge, and or experience in the areas of structural composites, high-temperature materials, mechanical or thermal design, vacuum facilities, cryogenic evaluation, and heat transfer. iMust be proficient in Excel, SolidWorks, MS Project, and exhibit strong initiative with demonstrated competency executing projects. Planning, prioritizing, and goal setting are key skills necessary for this position. Knowledge of mechanical design and convective heat transfer are desired. This position is responsible for applying scientific concepts, theories, and research practices in creative and innovative ways. Prepares, presents, and follows up on research proposals of limited to moderate size, scope, or duration; and working under general supervision where work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment and consistency with organizational goals and strategies.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Generates research in business and technical areas, producing yearly revenues of a set value or providing support for a set number of staff.
  • Managing research projects of moderate size from initiation through machining, testing, analysis and reporting.
  • Prepare, present, and follow-up on research proposals of limited to moderate size, scope, or duration.
  • Responsible for leading and managing projects or project tasks of limited to moderate size, scope, or duration.
  • Develop or direct the development of research findings, draw conclusions, and make recommendations.
  • Recommend changes in procedures and devise new approaches to deal with problems encountered.

Other Job Functions

  • Review progress and evaluate results on research projects.
  • Prepare and present reports to clients and the professional community.
  • Meet research goals within time and cost constraints.
  • Lead marketing and project development activities in defined market areas.
  • Interact with research scientists and associates in multiple areas of the organization.
  • Participate in the technical evaluation of assigned staff and in the identification of their development needs.
  • Performs other duties as required by supervisor

Required Experience:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Qualifications

  • US Citizenship required.
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain security clearance at a level equivalent to Department of Defense (DOD) SECRET
  • BS in mechanical engineering with 3-4 years relevant experience, or MS degree in relevant technical discipline.
  • Relevant background in heat transfer, lab testing or related materials discipline

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. in Materials Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
  • 1-5 years of experience in materials research and/or mechanical testing
  • Active Security clearance

This position involves work in an office and laboratory environment and could require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including:

  • Safety glasses
  • Hearing protection (varies based on tasks)
  • Shoe covers

Physical Demands

In performing the work for this position, the engineer must be able to:

  • Perform work utilizing a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Sit for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area.
  • Stand for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area.
  • Climb ladders and stairs in performing the work.

Travel

Moderate travel as required.
