Facilitates complex communication between staff and clients or patients, which includes parents or guardians. Communication may take place in a medical or community setting; providing interpretation, sight translation, and/or translation of documents on an AVS (After Visiti Summary). Communication would be in Hmong/ English:

Location & Schedule:

  • Location: Milwaukee
  • Schedule: 20 Hours/Week
  • Potential for Weekend & Holiday Hours

Education

  • High School graduate or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED).

  • Completion of Medical Interpreting course to include ethics, medical terminology or proven linguistic abilities in medical interpreting strongly preferred. Multi-semester Medical Interpreter course completion through a Technical School or higher education institution strongly preferred.

  • National Certification must be completed within 2 years of hire and certification must be maintained.

Experience

  • Minimum of two years Hmong interpreter experience required, preferably in a medical setting. In-house contractors may qualify after full rotation has been completed, generally around 12 months.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Bilingual who speaks, reads and writes proficiently in both native and target languages (e.g.: Burmese, Hmong, Karen, Rohingya) with ability to break linguistic and cultural barriers between patients and medical staff. Ability to shift from one language to another in simultaneous and consecutive mode of interpreting.

  • Exhibits guiding behaviors that reflect Children's values and support our mission and vision.

  • Solid knowledge of complex medical terminology through completion of Medical Terminology class or proven linguistic abilities in medical interpreting.

  • Knowledge of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) code of ethics.

  • Computer and word processing expertise including MS Word, comfort with an iPad and working in our electronic health record.

  • Good customer service skills, strong communication skills and excellent listening skills.

  • Effective organizational skills with attention to detail including ability to prioritize and assess needs.

  • Ability to multi-task in order to manage interpretation for more than one patient/family at a time.

  • Ability to pass verbal and written proficiency tests with an overall score of 80%.

  • Valid driver's license or ability to commute between work locations during the day.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Normal office environment where there is no reasonable potential for exposure to blood or other high risk body fluids.
  • Ability to walk to/from interpreting assignments and to stand for a long period of time during interpreting.
