Job Description

Summary:

The Ultrasound Technologist High Risk reports to the OB/GYN Physician Director and the Director of Imaging Operations. Under general supervision performs diagnostic procedures to assist the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury by using ultrasound equipment which uses the principles of sonography to produce images giving size and depth of the tissue being studied. Fosters patient and family centered care and nursing services in accordance with Lifespan and The Lifespan Physician Group*s mission vision values with consideration of the life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.

Responsibilities:

Operates ultrasound equipment efficiently. Maintains aseptic conditions during invasive procedures.

Reviews available clinical data from charts LifeLinks and other EMR systems in order to alert nurses and/or physicians physician extenders or licensed practitioner to possible contradictions for exam/procedure.

Reviews and records pertinent patient history and supporting clinical data to facilitate optimum diagnostic results.

Observes and reassures patient prior to and during all exams / procedures.

Performs ultrasound scanning for exams / procedures specific to the patient population of the OB/GYN physicians.

Positions and instructs patient regarding the procedure in order to obtain the desired diagnostic results specified by the physician physician extender or licensed practitioner.

Performs ultrasound exam and/or procedure using ultrasound equipment and records anatomical and pathophysiological data on film. Adds technical notes as needed in PACS or other recording medium used by OB/GYN.

Assembles all necessary information and imaging including own impressions of the case and presents them to the physician or licensed practitioner for interpretation.

In Procedures: Assists physician physician extender or licensed practitioner in procedures by confirming the location of interest using ultrasound equipment .

In Procedures: Scans the patient using ultrasound equipment at designated intervals during the procedure and acquires images. Hands instruments and equipment to the physician physician extender or licensed practitioner.

Reviews daily procedure and scheduled examinations.

Stores supplies required for ultrasound procedures.

Checks expiration dates for all ultrasound supplies and medications. Disposes of expired materials using appropriate procedure.

Ensures that ultrasound and other equipment in the department functions properly to maintain accuracy of test procedures. Contacts appropriate service personnel within and/or outside the hospital to make necessary repairs or adjustments. Notifies manager or lead ultrasound technologist.

Performs all duties in consideration of optimum department efficiency.

Maintains and enhances own professional expertise through participation in in-service education professional seminars and meetings.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

FMF certification required.

ARDMS certification or eligibility required.

Must acquire ARDMS certification within 24 months of graduation from accredited program to maintain site accreditation from the American College of Radiology.

Must have OB certification or eligible.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development st s and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

One year of progressive OB ultrasound experience preferred.

Analytical skills to determine best method of obtaining the desired diagnostic results.

Interpersonal skills to deal effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress as well as with staff members and physicians.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals physicians* offices and ancillary healthcare enterprises.

Works with medical equipment and has direct patient contact.

Any potential hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions including use safety equipment and protective clothing.

Walks and stands intermittently throughout the day.

Subject to electrical and energy hazards.

Physical dexterity and strength to operate ultrasound and equipment and to lift and move patients into correct position.

May lift and position patients and lift supplies up to 50 pounds.
