Company Overview

Koniag is one of 12 regional Alaska Native corporations established by Congress in 1971 under the terms of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA). ANCSA settled the aboriginal land claims of Alaska Native people by conveying land and seed capital to Native for-profit corporations representing various geographic regions of the state.

Koniag was incorporated on June 23, 1972, to manage these assets on behalf of approximately 3,400 Alutiiq Shareholders who originated from the Kodiak Archipelago. Koniag’s original share of the ANCSA settlement was $24 million, 844 acres of land and the “subsurface estate” of around 900,000 acres. Through innovative strategies and prudent execution, Koniag has grown into a diversified holding company with portfolio companies and investments spanning multiple industries.

We are committed to creating opportunities and sustainable growth to fund benefits for our Shareholders and their families. Shareholder benefits include dividends, educational and youth scholarships, elder distributions, among others. Koniag promotes and shares our Alutiiq culture and advocates for the people and communities of the Kodiak Island region. Like our Alutiiq ancestors over thousands of years, Koniag adapts to meet the needs of our Shareholders and our region.

We are driven by our core values, incorporating corporate responsibility, our traditions, and Alutiiq culture into all we do. Koniag is a central place of belonging dedicated to improving the quality of life for our Shareholders, Descendants, and the entire Kodiak community in meaningful, positive ways.
