Waukesha County is accepting applications on a continuous basis from experienced law enforcement applicants, certified law enforcement applicants, and individuals currently attending a law enforcement academy.

Becoming a Deputy

Pay
The 2023 starting pay rate for candidates with no experience is at least $32.53/hr. (2024 wage rages are pending ratification of a new collective bargaining agreement).  Starting pay for those hired with experience will be determined based on experience.

Lateral Transfer Benefits
Newly hired deputies who have at least three years of full-time experience as a certified law enforcement officer within the 48 months prior to hire are afforded a higher starting wage, up to 10 days of vacation and 40 hours of paid sick time during the first year of employment.  After the first year of employment, deputies hired with lateral transfer benefits accrue vacation time in accordance with the County's vacation schedule, based on their total number of years of experience as a full-time certified law enforcement officer.

Example of Duties

Under supervision, to enforce federal, state, and County laws and ordinances consistent with policies, procedures, rules, regulations and other communications of the Department.  Patrols County roads and highways to ensure the peace and safety; maintains order and security in courtrooms and County facilities; serves civil process and warrants, and performs other duties as required.  
 
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 

  1. Ensures the peace and safety of the public through enforcement of laws, ordinances and Department policies.
  2. Patrols roads and highways in Waukesha County.  
  3. Attends court as a bailiff and preserves peace and order in courtrooms; responds to safety and security situations within County facilities as requested.  
  4. Responds to complaints and conducts thorough investigations including, but not limited to, felony, misdemeanor, accident and ordinance violations.  
  5. Issues citations, properly collects evidence, completes appropriate paperwork and reports, and makes arrests where appropriate. 
  6. Delivers and serves civil process papers and warrants on individuals, including transporting individuals to court or jail as directed by the warrant.  
  7. Provides assistance during special events including traffic direction and crowd control; ensures public safety.  
  8. Renders first aid when necessary.  
  9. Transports persons in custody to and from institutions or court and takes appropriate security measures to ensure custody.  
  10. Responds to emergency situations and assists in providing security and search and rescue operations; makes appropriate notification to persons and agencies required to respond to given emergency situations.  
  11. Uses appropriate levels of force to capture, control and detain individuals.   
  12. Maintains a variety of records and prepares clear and concise reports.  
  13. Appears in court as a witness and testifies concerning law enforcement actions and investigations.  
  14. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees, law enforcement agencies, court and other government officials, medical professionals and the general public.  
  15. Represents the Department and makes presentations to school and community groups on law enforcement activities including crime prevention, safety, security and Department services.  
  16. Ensures truthfulness at all times and provides credible testimony.
  17. Maintains a level of fitness to pass the Department’s annual Physical Ability Test (PAT) which simulates important physical abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Deputy Sheriff (applicable to individuals hired on or after January 1, 2008).
  18. Performs other duties as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

An initial application screen is conducted by Human Resources. Those meeting the minimum requirements are referred to the Sheriff's Department for further evaluation.  The minimum requirements are:

  1. At least 18-years of age.
  2. United States citizen.
  3. High school diploma or GED.
  4. Sixty (60) semester credits of post high school education (associate degree level or higher) from an accredited university, college, or technical school, preferably in criminal justice, police science, business or public administration, or the social sciences.  Note: Sixty (60) credits may be waived for individuals with training (e.g. military training) or experience that has been approved by the American Council on Education (ACE).  For information on how to request a waiver, visit https://wilenet.widoj.gov.   5. Ability to possess a firearm.
  6. No felony convictions.
  7. Valid driver's license.
  8. Law enforcement experience, eligible for certification as a law enforcement professional in the State of Wisconsin (this means you graduated from a law enforcement academy), or individuals currently attending a law enforcement academy.

Waukesha County's pay plans, group insurance programs, and other benefit policies comprise a package that is highly competitive and satisfies the needs of its employees. Salary Plan
Deputy Sheriff's wages are negotiated with the Waukesha Deputy Sheriff’s Labor Union and contain 7 steps. Employees in steps 1 and 2 are eligible for a merit (step) increase every 6 months with acceptable performance; thereafter, employees must work 12 months in each step before becoming eligible for a merit (step) increase with acceptable performance. Employees normally begin at the first step in their salary range, but depending on an individual's qualifications and other factors, employees may start at a higher step.

Work Schedule
The normal work schedule for a Deputy Sheriff shall be four (4) days on and two (2) days off and then five (5) days on and two (2) days off, on a rotating schedule. Eight (8) hours and fifteen (15) minutes shall constitute a normal workday. Forty-one hours and fifteen minutes (41-1/4 hours) shall constitute a normal workweek.

Health Insurance
High Deductible Health Plan with Health Savings Account (HSA). Coverage begins on the first day of the month following date of hire. Dependent upon participation in a health risk assessment, employees may be eligible for an employer contribution to their Health Savings Account. 

Waukesha Employee Health & Wellness Center
Employees of Waukesha County and their dependents (ages 2+) who are enrolled in health insurance have access to an onsite medical clinic operated by Everside Health.  The clinic is located at 615 W. Moreland Blvd in Waukesha.  Patient confidentiality is of the utmost importance as all staff are employees of Everside Health.  Providers of the clinic include a Board-Certified Physician, three Physician Assistants, one Physical Therapist, and one Health Coach.

The clinic is open Monday - Friday and has early morning to evening appointment times.  Patients should be able to schedule same day or next day appointments for service.  Services available include: health coaching, preventative/wellness care, non-preventative (illness/injury visits), immunizations, lab work, disease management, physical therapy, medication dispensing, and work-related injuries.

Health Care Flexible Spending Account
This plan allows you to make pre-tax payroll contributions to use for the reimbursement of qualified out-of-pocket medical expenses. The 2024 contribution limit is $3,050. This benefit is not available for employees enrolled in the High Deductible Health Plan. Coverage begins on the first day of the month following date of hire.

Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account
This plan allows you to make pre-taxed payroll contributions to use for reimbursement of your dependent care expenses.  The IRS allows you to contribute up to $5,000 per year from your paycheck for child and/or elder care. Coverage begins on the first day of the month following date of hire.

Dental Insurance
Waukesha County offers you a choice of two dental insurance plans. Coverage begins on the first day of the month following date of hire.

Vision Insurance
Coverage begins on the first day of the month following date of hire.

Premium Option Plan
Employees are automatically enrolled in this pre-tax option.  This plan allows you to pay your share of the health, dental, and vision insurance premiums on a pre-tax basis.  This means you pay less state, federal, and FICA taxes, thus saving you money.  You can elect to pay on a post- tax basis if you prefer.

Vacation
During the first calendar year and for each succeeding year through the sixth (6th) year of continuous employment, an employee can earn one (1) day of vacation for each month of employment with a maximum of ten (10) days. Individuals hired with at least 3-years of full-time law enforcement experience will be placed in the vacation earning schedule based on years of service as a full-time law enforcement professional.  

Holidays
Employees are eligible for eleven (11) paid holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, The Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve Day, and Two (2) Floating Holidays that are earned on February 1 and June 1 of each year.

Sick Leave
Employees earn one (1) day of paid sick leave for each month of employment to a maximum of one hundred twenty (120) days. After serving six (6) months of employment, employees are eligible for sick leave benefits retroactive to the date of hire.

Life Insurance
Automatic coverage at no cost to employee. Coverage is effective first of the month following six months of employment. Coverage upon hire is one times annual salary and then transitions to two times prior year gross salary after at least one full calendar year of employment is completed.

Voluntary Worksite Benefits
Waukesha County offers supportive voluntary benefit options for Accident Insurance, Critical Illness Insurance, and Hospital Indemnity Insurance. These benefits help pay for unexpected medical costs and other expenses. Each offering is ala carte so you can select the plan that is right for you and your family. Monthly payroll deductions for the Voluntary Supportive benefits are only offered as after-tax deductions, so any benefits received under these plans are tax-free.

Dependent Life Insurance
You may choose to elect dependent life insurance for your spouse and/or eligible dependents. Employees pay the full premium cost for dependent life insurance. Coverage will begin the first of the month following six (6) months of employment.

You may choose to purchase additional supplemental term life insurance. Employees pay the full premium cost for supplemental term life insurance. Coverage will begin the first of the month following six (6) months of employment.

Wisconsin Retirement System - Pension Plan
As a full-time employee, you will automatically be enrolled in the Wisconsin Retirement System.  This pension is administered by the State of Wisconsin Department of Employee Trust Funds.

You will be required to pay the employee’s share of contributions to the fund, while Waukesha County contributes the employer’s share. Employees are vested in their portion of contributions immediately and after five years of creditable service for the employer contribution.

Deferred Compensation
Waukesha County offers access to a 457 Deferred Compensation program that allows you to save and invest for retirement through payroll deduction.  This completely employee funded.  Participation is voluntary and employees can enroll at any time.  Employees may contribute on a pre-tax or Roth basis.

Payroll Roth IRA
Waukesha County offers access to a payroll Roth IRA that allows you to save and invest for retirement through payroll deduction.  This completely employee funded.  Participation is voluntary and employees can enroll at any time.

Retirement Health Savings (RHS) Plan
This is a benefit funded by Waukesha County. Waukesha County will contribute up to $400 for Waukesha Deputy Sheriff’s Labor Union represented employees per year into an employee’s RHS account. Funds are available to the participant following separation of employment and can be used for reimbursement of qualified medical expenses or qualified insurance premium payments that occur post-employment. Contributions for employees represented by the Waukesha Deputy Sheriff’s Labor Union will begin the first of the month after twelve (12) months of employment with Waukesha County).

Social Security
During your working years, you regularly contribute a certain percentage of your income toward Social Security.  Waukesha County matches your contribution, dollar for dollar.

Electronic Direct Deposit Program
Employees will be required to have their paychecks electronically deposited into the financial institution and account of their choice.  Participants will receive a statement of earnings each payday as opposed to a payroll check.

Worker’s Compensation
As an employee of Waukesha County, you are protected under the Worker’s Compensation Act, which provides for hospital, medical, surgical care, and income loss payments for work-related injuries and illnesses.

Jury Duty & Witness Service
In the event you are subpoenaed for jury duty or subpoenaed to serve as a witness in connection with an incident occurring while at work, you will be eligible for paid leave.

Funeral Leave
In the event of a death in your immediate family, you will be allowed up to twenty-four (24) hours of leave with pay to attend the funeral. 

Employee Assistance Program
Waukesha County offers access to a free confidential Employee Assistance Program for all employees and members of their household. The program provides a helping hand with such problems as stress, family & relationship concerns, alcohol or drug dependency, workplace conflicts, work life balance, depression and anxiety, parenting concerns, grief or loss, crisis situations, child or elder care resources, and convenience resources. Participants can receive up to eight (8) visits in person or telephonically with an EAP Provider per clinical issue per 12 months at no cost. Employees in the Sheriff’s Department also have access to a dedicated law enforcement counselor for services. Visits used through the dedicated counselor do not count towards the eight (8) sessions with a counselor under the Employee Assistance Program benefit. 

Tuition Assistance Program
Regular full-time and regular part-time employees who have passed a 6-month employment period are eligible for this program.  The County will reimburse 75% of eligible educational costs up to $400 per semester (up to $800 per calendar year).  Courses must be job-related and of direct benefit to the County or in a designated program to qualify.

Employee Discount Programs
