Job Description

Job Summary

The Transportation Planner will be responsible for managing daily shipment planning execution, creating loads within the TMS system and managing carrier and facility communications as they apply to order movement for respective NEI plants and warehouses, in a manner that ensures cost effective transportation of finished goods and inbound raw materials at service levels that meet corporate and plant objectives.  The position serves as liaison between logistics, customer service, procurement, distribution centers, shipping and the carrier in order to develop strong operating processes and pro-active communications.  The position will participate in developing the carrier base for NEI and be responsible for building and maintaining carrier relationships to support all shipping sites, across all transportation modes.  The Transportation Planner will also participate in carrier scorecard reviews and drive Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) including cost, quality and service through problem solving, root cause analysis and highly effective communications.

  • Accountable for executing the day to day inbound and outbound load planning activities for IM, LTL, and TL shipments for plants and distribution centers.
  • Utilizes TMS and other available system tools to tender, schedule and track shipments, while managing cost, service, and capacity through optimization processes.
  • Applies decision making and problem-solving skills to resolve unplanned events with carriers, such as on time delivery delays and accessorial charges.
  • Builds and sustains positive relationships with internal and external customers, teammates, and carriers.
  • Collaborates with teammates and carriers to identify and implement cost and service improvement opportunities.
  • Manages carrier freight claims.
  • Coordinates transportation for customer returns.
  • Participates in carrier business scorecard reviews.
  • Understands and facilitates compliance with all state and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
  • Understand market trends to assist in negotiation of spot quote process.
  • Manages carrier trailer pools and proactively identifies gaps to prevent loading issues.
  • Reviews and implements changes to processes to keep them current.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by Manager.

Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or pursuing a bachelor's with an anticipated graduation date within one year
  • 2-3 years’ experience in transportation industry required
  • Experience using a TMS system required
  • Experience in a Supply Chain, Logistics or Operations role
  • Experience dispatching or planning in the Transportation/Logistics industry preferred
  • Knowledge of LTL/TL pricing formats
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with AS400, or similar reporting/ERP tools is a plus.
Physical Requirements

Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

The worker must be able to access, analyze and otherwise work with, enter information stored in or obtained through the company's computer system, and to communicate effectively with co-workers and third parties who have business dealings with the Company's operations.  

Travel Requirements

Minimal travel is anticipated with this position
