Job Description

Job Summary

The Melt Supervisor provides first line leadership to a team of hourly non-exempt employees in a continuous process Foundry manufacturing environment.  The Melt Supervisor is responsible for ensuring safety, quality, productivity, and efficiency metrics are met through proper coaching and supervision of employees.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for overseeing iron production and the maintenance of equipment in and around the melt department
  • Communicate and consult with other departments and shifts, including technical services, laboratories and molding lines to ensure final iron quality specifications
  • Monitor materials and supplies by effectively communicating and consulting with outside vendors and internal resources such as purchasing and receiving
  • Responsible for attaining departmental goals on Safety, Quality, Productivity and Profitability KPI’s on a regular basis
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance to OSHA, EPA and DNR standards and regulations.
  • Monitor and supervise the operation and repair of the cupola, receiver, all furnaces, the emission system and ladles, reporting any abnormalities or compliance issues to management and/or environmental engineering.
  • Provides ongoing training and coaching to employees to ensure proper communication of and adherence to all Company procedures, policies, rules and work instructions
  • Champions continuous improvement methodology by leading problem solving efforts and coaching team members in resolving conflicts and achieving results
  • Facilitates meetings, documenting productivity gains and recognizing employees for quality improvement accomplishments, ensuring that production rates are met and standard processes are being followed
Expected Areas of Competence (KSAs)
  • Ability to interview, coach, counsel, motivate, train, and communicate objectives.
  • Must be able to deal with issues with multiple variables such as process improvement and resolution of poor performance on an individual or departmental basis.
  • Must be able to demonstrate effective oral and written communication across different levels and departments.
  • Ability to effectively manage performance and confront issues directly.
  • Must be able to work within a team environment not only within the organization unit but also across departments and shifts.
  • Strong knowledge of Quality Specifications using identification, data gathering solution development, implementation and follow up skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including familiarity with MS Office suite of products (i.e. - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

Education and Experience Requirements
 
  • Previous experience in production or melt supervision highly preferred.
  • Experience in heavy manufacturing and a unionized environment is a plus. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, manufacturing/ technology or other technical discipline strongly desired.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be physically able to stand for long periods of time
  • Must actively engage in safe working practices
  • Must be able to tolerate hot working conditions and a loud environment
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
The worker must be able to access, analyze and otherwise work with, enter information stored in or obtained through the company's computer system, and to communicate effectively with co-workers and third parties who have business dealings with the company's Human Resources operations.  

Travel Requirements

Up to 5% as required for production, supplier visits and training and technical meetings.
