Job Description

Job Summary


The Quality Metallurgical Engineer position provides technical guidance and support to the different departments of the company in order to produce castings that meets and exceed all customer specifications, analyzes production results, quality data and costs and initiates projects to improve performance and interacts with customers.

Essential Functions

    • Implement, improve and administer melt, molding and laboratory operating procedures and work instructions to produce iron that meets and exceeds all customer and process specifications in a cost effective manner.
    • Responsible for specifying of all incoming materials associated with melt, molding and pouring processes and for the quality of such materials.
    • Implement and administer all policies associated with the sand systems to produce castings that meet and exceeds all customer and process specifications in a cost effective manner.
    • Define heat treat instructions to produce iron that meets all customer and process specifications.
    • Responsible for all material certifications required by customers or internal procedures.
    • Assist in design and implementation of new technology associated with process control and casting metallurgical properties.
    • Assist in continuous education for technicians, supervisors, managers and personnel that have a direct impact in the quality of the castings.
    • Monitor processes and establish actions plans in areas where is needed.
    • Maintaining all lab and metallurgical testing equipment.
    • Comply and champion with the Quality Policy. .
    • Operates as a key contact for customer and raw materials, testing and value added suppliers monitoring performance and developing products and better processes.
    • Data collection and application of data science to solve manufacturing problems in any department (molding, core room, melt, etc.).
    • Utilize statistical methods to identify the root cause of problems and create/evaluate solution alternatives.



Expected Areas of Competence (KSAs)
 
    • Ferrous metallurgy.
    • Basic Material Characterization.
    • Thermal Analysis.
    • Proficiency in statistics.
    • Ability to code in R and/or Python
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong interpersonal and influencing skills.
    • Ability to read blueprints.
    • Ability to apply logic and deductive reasoning in order to recommend alternative solutions to problems.
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization, in a team-oriented environment.
    • Highly detail oriented; checks own work, keeps accurate records, organizes information effectively.
    • Demonstrated history of: taking initiative, ability to handle multiple priorities, meeting commitments and propose creative solutions to problems to achieve business results.
    • High level of energy, personal accountability and integrity.
    • PC-based computing experience (Word, Excel, and Power Point) is essential.
    • Working knowledge and demonstrated application of Lean Six Sigma tools.
    • Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents, such as Material Specifications, MSDS sheets, procedures and work instructions, and other related documents.

Education and Experience Requirements
 
    • B.S. Metallurgy or Material Science and Engineering; advanced degree a plus.
    • Prior experience in a grey or ductile iron foundry experience is preferred. 
    • Lean Six Sigma continuous improvement certification training (preferred but not required).


Physical Requirements

Sedentary work. Exerting up to 15 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

The worker must be able to access, analyze and otherwise work with, enter information stored in or obtained through the company's computer system, and to communicate effectively with co-workers and third parties who have business dealings with the company.

Travel Requirements

Travel up to ten (10) % may be required.
