Responsibilities

Primary Function
This position is one of the content-producers for NIU Alumni Association (NIUAA) communication channels. This position is helps develop high-quality written content that builds engagement with, pride among, knowledge within, and initiates action from NIU's 240,000+ living alumni.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally)
This position writes features, press releases, articles, blurbs, and letters to be used across all NIUAA channels, including (but not limited to) the alumni association webpage (myniu.com), email communications, print pieces, Northern Now (the alumni magazine), and social media. This position reports to the Director of Alumni Communications.

Duties and Responsibilities
*Must be able to represent the university and the Alumni Association in a professional, enthusiastic manner with a customer service and team focus.
*Write short- or long-form stories and articles to be used across a variety of media channels.
*Research alumni for potential articles.
*Create compelling teasers for use on social media.
*Work within CMS to publish content created by self and others.
*Collaborate with partners in and outside of the NIUAA to produce content.
*Double check details throughout content to ensure accuracy.
*Proofread content prior to distribution to ensure it is error-free.
*Establish a familiarity with the NIUAA and NIUF style guide, in order for edited and proofread content to be consistent with desired style.
*Exhibit excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills.
*Other duties as assigned.

Working Hours Max 25 hours per week up to 900 hours
Starting Salary $15 per hour

Qualifications
Education and Experience Required
*A bachelor's degree in public relations, journalism, advertising, communication, English, or a related creative / writing field.
*A minimum of 2 years of experience creating content for a newspaper, magazine, journal, website, social media, or similar outlet, with the ability to provide samples.
*Strong literacy with social media platforms, including the ability to pull reports.
Education and Experience Preferred
*A master's degree in communication.
*Five or more years of experience creating content for a newspaper, magazine, journal, website, social media, or similar outlet, with the ability to provide samples.
*Experience working for an alumni association, foundation, or similar not-for-profit entity.
List the knowledge, skills, and abilities critical to the performance of this position
*Ability to work under tight deadlines is expected.
*Strong written and oral communication skills.
*Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
*Ability to use a database and Microsoft Office suite.
*Positive attitude, and ability to thrive under pressure.
