Job Description

Job Summary                                                            
By effective partnering with operations and other facility management leadership, the Safety Engineer advocates and assists in maintaining a safe and healthy working environment in a manufacturing setting.  This position is responsible for auditing work areas to determine potential safety hazards and identifying, recommending and reducing or eliminating unsafe working conditions in compliance with Federal, State and local laws and regulations.

  • Provide leadership and direction around all safety regulations, policies and procedures and assure continuity and consistency of safety policies and procedures.
  • Assist in controlling hazardous working conditions and unsafe employee activities through interfacing with supervisory personnel.
  • Participate in developing and conducting safety training programs that are specific to the work environment and including the OSHA standard requirements.
  • Investigate safety incidents in a timely manner.
  • Work with Operations Management to drive the needs for safety awareness and safe work practices by implementing safety programs and procedures.
  • Steer and coordinate the plant safety committees in conjunction with all levels and areas of the organization.  Committees should participate in safety audits, injury and safety incident reviews, and safety issues and concerns.
  • Review and recommend the requirements necessary for safe work practices during the implementation or modification of equipment or processes.
  • Assist in calculating and communicating safety performance metrics and goals for the operations and regularly track and report progress against safety goals.
  • Evaluate and analyze injuries and related trends at plants, and work directly with those operations to establish root causes and corrective actions.
  • Develop and implement action plans to improve site safety performance, tracking and measuring corrective action and improvement.

This position description is intended to cover the most significant, ongoing job functions and competency areas.  Successful performance in the role will require performing satisfactorily other duties as assigned. 
 
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related Engineering field required.
  • Will consider candidates with at least four (4) years previous safety experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment in lieu of education.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification a strong plus.
  • High school diploma required.  Strongly prefer Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related Engineering field required.
  • Will consider candidates with at least four (4) years previous safety experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment in lieu of education.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification a strong plus.


Physical Requirements

A substantial amount of time will be spent in the Foundry walking, interacting with employees and equipment.

Exertions up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body may be necessary as needed. Ability to be on feet for extended periods of time. Must be able lift 50 pounds.

The worker must be able to access, analyze and otherwise work with, enter information stored in or obtained through the company's computer system, and to communicate effectively with co-workers and third parties who have business dealings with the company's Safety Department.  


Travel Requirements
Approximately 10% Minimal domestic travel between NEI sites may be required.
