Throw Away Your Watch and Make Sure You’re Pointing True North

“Throw away your watch and make sure you’re pointing true north,” Michelle Saul said to me on my radio show last week. Michelle is the founder and President of Possibilities Consulting LLC, where she has built an excellent reputation as a versatile consultant, trainer, executive coach and keynote speaker. My radio show, Breaking the Glass Ceiling, Going Beyond Expectations is about the inner glass ceiling—those limiting mindsets and beliefs that keep us from having the career and life we truly desire. Michelle and I were on a roll talking about creating an environment of possibilities. We both believe that all things are possible and yes you could argue we’ll never be talented ballerinas at our age, but with a strong vision, the right mindset, leveraging help and support from others—you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

Your mind is a powerful place to start. Having the right mindset starts with the practice of positive self-talk. You may be thinking this is the oldest advice out there, but it’s advice that is timeless! Positive self-talk is when we give to ourselves the love and respect that we require from others. At the core of positive self-talk is the belief that you are worthy, you have the capability to learn and achieve, and you are to be encouraged and celebrated. Michelle shared this, “Would you keep as a best friend someone who talks to you as you talk to yourself?” If your self-talk is negative, I’m assuming that friend would not last long. So why is it that we don’t treat ourselves like that best friend who only has our best interest(s) in mind? When we speak of or think negative thoughts this will ensure things are not possible. We become our own obstacle.

If you truly want to connect with what’s possible, Michelle believes you need to get clear on what’s possible for you and align your thoughts and your life --physically, intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. Don’t forget to also take the actions to bring your dream forward. What’s important is that you’re on the path and there are always different ways to approach your career. Careers will take shape the way you want them to if you have your compass pointed true north toward your passion, desires and what works best in your own life.
