Responsibilities |
|
Assists the Claims function in developing claims litigation management guidelines and technical operating procedures to ensure quality, consistency and control of litigated files.
Assists the Claims function in developing guidelines for utilization of outside counsel, relationships with counsel, expected behavior of counsel and costs associated with counsel.
Monitors adherence to guidelines and takes appropriate action when counsel does not follow guidelines consistent with Sentry policy and philosophy.
May provide advice and counsel to Claims staff as requested on the selection of independent legal counsel and technical claims matters as appropriate.
Participates in the development of standards and functional objectives for the unit, including cascading objectives.
Coordinates efforts toward the achievement of established objectives.
Monitors legal costs of outside counsel and makes recommendations for improved service/cost as appropriate.
Reviews and approves/disapproves any request for fee increases by law firms.
Reviews legal bills and enforcement of standard billing practices in the audit process for outsourced legal services.
May assist in providing consultation to other members of the Claims Audit & Standards Unit and the Claims Department on significant defense matters.
Participates in technical training of Claims personnel in the fields of tort law, statutory law and contract law and provides training as necessary for members of the Claims Audit & Standards Unit.
Trains Claims field management and personnel in the effective use of outside counsel. |

Qualifications |
|
JD Degree.
5-8 years of related work experience.
Wide breadth of knowledge and experience in claims lines of business including, but not limited to Workers' Compensation, General Liability and Auto Liability defense and/or insurance Claims.
Substantial trial experience in claims lines of business including, but not limited to Workers' Compensation, General Liability, Products liability and Auto Liability insurance defense preferred.
Similar experience in Insurance Claims Litigation Management positions may be an acceptable equivalent upon approval of hiring manager.
Ability to interact at all levels of management as an Attorney and Senior Advisor.
Good human relations and communication skills.
Ability to meet the limited travel requirements of the position. |
