JOB SUMMARY:
This position provides high quality nursing care and patient education to meet the needs of MHSI’s patient population using the nursing process to guide patient care.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to the Clinic Manager and/or Nurse Manager, maintains a collaborative relationship with all management staff.
There are no positions directly reporting to this position.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Perform nursing procedures including treatments, assessments, tests and administration of medications in accordance with established policies and licensure as directed by Physician’s Assistant, Nurse Midwife, or Physician. Educate patients regarding providers’ orders, treatments, health plans and health related issues.
2. Elicit patient clinical symptoms, reactions to and/or perception of illness and/or their expression of need. Communicate this information to the appropriate health discipline.
3. Implement nursing measures and protocols for the comfort and well-being of the patient. Using the nursing process, ensure culturally competent, holistic nursing care provided.
4. Accessible to the immediate clinical area for administration of medications and during emergency situations.
5. Responsible for patient triaging and inquires both in person and by telephone.
6. Prepare patients for exam and/or treatment, collect data and initiation of appropriate procedures per department protocol. Assists in the examination of patients, using the nursing process.
7. Implement provider orders, documents appropriate and required information in patient’s charts.
8. Act as a resource to medical support staff, collaborate and delegate as necessary.
9. Responsible for starting IV lines. Based on established protocols, administer oral, subcutaneous, intradermal, intramuscular, and all intravenous medications.
10. Assist with the resolution of patient flow problems and work with Clinic Supervisor/Nurse Manager to improve programs to manage the overall departmental operations and staff.
11. Assist with providing extended/urgent care nursing coverage as needed and when requested for various MHSI sites.
12. Work integrally with the management staff to implement new programs and provides input regarding needed changes.
13. Aware of state and federal regulations governing MHSI and works to ensure compliance for reporting, licensing and code regulations.
14. Responsible for weekly/monthly reports as assigned, maintains and compiles logs, files and records as required and according to established protocol.
15. Assist with ensuring compliance with OSHA promotes safety and infection control standards, maintains a clean and safe environment for patients, visitors and staff. Organizes work area and patient waiting area so that it is neat and clean at all times.
16. Inform scheduled patients of any delays due to physician lateness, emergencies, schedule back-up, etc.
17. Assist with chart audits, as needed.
18. Appropriately document all patient encounters/interactions, including phone contacts.
19. Attend staffl meetings and other meetings as needed and when requested, participate in continuing nursing education including current certification in CPR.
20. Responsible for adhering to all service standards, policies and procedures of MHSI.
21. Perform all related duties as requested or assigned.
SPECIALIZED REQUIREMENTS:
• Graduate of an accredited registered nurse program and hold a current, unrestricted license to practice nursing in the state of Wisconsin.
• Two to three years of clinical or physician office experience as well as, emergency room and/or urgent care triage experience preferred.
• Must successfully complete on the job orientation for the position assigned.
• Knowledge of and the ability to use medical equipment normally assigned to nursing services.
• Ability to effectively evaluate situations, make decisions and resolve conflict.
• Excellent communication skills, must express ideas clearly, concisely and convincingly both orally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with patients, support staff and providers.
• Current CPR certification.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be able to sit, stand, walk, squat, bend, and reach above shoulders and twist frequently during the work shift.
• Must be able to:
•lift up to 50 pounds from floor to waist.
•lift up to 20 pounds over the head.
•carry up to 40 pounds a reasonable distance.
• May be required to use foot pedals on carts or machines.
• Subject to stress and fatigue.
• Requires functional vision, speech and hearing.
• Requires manual and finger dexterity and eye hand coordination when working with patients and equipment.
• May be exposed to the following hazards, mechanical, electrical, chemical and radiation as well as blood and body fluids; therefore, personal protective equipment must be worn as necessary.
• Will be required to wear gloves, goggles and gowns on an as needed basis.
• Must be able to operate all nursing equipment essential to performing the duties of the job.
BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS EXPOSURE:
Job duties include tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids and/or tissues, by means of the inherent potential or direct mucous membrane or skin contact, as well as the potential via spills or splashes. Job duties may potentially involve exposure to other occupational hazards.
