General Summary

The Operations Manager is responsible for the management of the production department within the manufacturing plant. This leadership role is responsible for setting the direction and achieving results through the entire operations team. This must be accomplished in an environment where safety comes first while continually improving Cost, Quality, Service, and Productivity objectives. This role must partner with other functional areas, customers, and suppliers to align operational activities with established business objectives and product/customer requirements. This role must be effective at working across multiple disciplines and be effective at building and leading effective cross-functional teams through ongoing training, coaching, and mentoring while promoting employee engagement and teamwork. This role ensures compliance with all applicable Federal and State laws and regulations, as well as Company policies and standards related to safety, quality, and workplace conduct.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Manage daily plant operations and provide guidance for production and maintenance operations.
  • Manage production in vertically integrated flavor manufacturing business considering demand forecast for co-manufacturing locations. Create and maintain production planning using demand signals from multiple sources. Publish daily/weekly/monthly master production schedules. Analyze capacity demand. Respond to and communicate changes in supply and/or demand, adjusting plans as appropriate, including pre-building inventory to maintain service levels.
  • Lead plant continuous improvement initiatives to drive operational excellence.
  • Create alignment and accountability; establish clear goals that align with organizational vision to meet stated business objectives. Ensure key workplace objectives are met (safety, cost, quality, service, environmental compliance, employee engagement, talent development and retention). Communicate priorities and needs through the daily direction setting meeting.
  • Monitor key performance indicators to assess labor, yields, and conversion cost variance to budget and controllable expenses. Support enablers and capital expenditures.
  • Be an active participant in the site's safety and quality management programs.
  • Ensure employees are properly trained in all aspects of their jobs.
  • Develop manufacturing processes and documentation for products considering personnel requirements, material, facility, and equipment needs.
  • Assist with post-production process order completion and investigate variance to budget.
  • Maintain adequate operating supplies and materials. Coordinate with material planners to ensure material supply is available in time to support schedule.
  • Maintain production routings within the SAP enterprise and create an annual operating budget.

Job Complexity

  • 24-hour accountability for the Operations Department; must be available to provide guidance and direction to address issues which may arise affecting facility, operation, or company.
  • Plant simultaneously runs a batch-continuous yeast extract process with a variable-demand reacted flavor and pre-mix operation. Balancing independent and interconnected production processes with small and flexible workforce requires adaptation in how resources are scheduled and allocated.
  • Production schedules at customer locations are dynamic. Close communication with all locations will be critical. Managing appropriate safety stock levels for materials to avoid unnecessary expediting costs is critical. Inventory levels must be monitored to manage costs and losses due to obsolescence. This role requires a high level of attention to detail with critical thinking and agility demonstrating adaptability to the changing supply and demand environments.
  • Maintaining appropriate inventory and production planning to accommodate added complexities from within the vertical integration environment with limited demand visibility requires a high level of process ownership.
  • If key cost or quality performance indicators are not being met, this individual will utilize one or more of a variety of problem-solving techniques and form a cross functional team to identify root cause and correction action plans. The position may at times lead, facilitate, or participate in problem solving teams.
  • Close partnership with material management team is required to ensure appropriate inventory levels are maintained balancing service and overage risks.
  • Facilitate the implementation of operational excellence tools to increase the capabilities of plant associates toward a high-performance organization.
  • Must possess the ability to overcome to overcome resistance to organization change, influencing others, and leading the change initiative.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize based on business needs.
  • Must develop and maintain rapport with employees at all levels of the organization to drive results. Must interface effectively with multiple functions within and outside of the plant.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience in manufacturing environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Food or Pharmaceutical industries highly preferred.
  • Previous experience managing groups of employees in a manufacturing environment.
  • Previous experience working in a lean manufacturing environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of OSHA standards, HACCP guidelines, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
  • Ongoing passion to identify continuous improvement opportunities and lead initiatives to deliver bottom-line results. Must be a change agent.
  • Outstanding analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Excel (maintaining and creating complex formulas linked to data queries from SAP).
  • Highly proficient with SAP (or other MRP software).
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and/or Black Belt certification preferred.
  • Ability to use intuition and experience to complement data analysis capabilities.

Working Conditions

The working environment includes both office and plant floor settings. Exposure to industrial noise, forklift traffic, moving mechanical parts, and temperature extremes occurs in operating areas of the plant.

Compensation and Benefits:

The target base salary range for this full-time, salaried position is between

$85,900-$140,800

Individual base pay depends on work location and additional factors such as experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training. Total pay may include other forms of compensation. In addition, we offer competitive health, dental, 401k and wellness benefits beginning on the first day of employment.
