Job Description
Major Responsibilities:
  • The Aurora Health Care Medical Director of Undergraduate Medical Education is responsible for oversight of all undergraduate student experiences within the organization, with approval of contracted academic institutions.
  • Ensure that clerkships and other student experiences, students, and support staff function at the highest level possible given the resources of the institution. Provide overall vision for the clerkships and other student experiences in collaboration with clerkship directors, faculty, administration, all contracted academic institutions clerkship directors and department chairs, as well as the AUWAMG Board of Directors.
  • Manage educational sites, including schedules for students and faculty, support personnel, educational budget, office space, and student housing arrangements. Ensure that AHC sites achieve LCME requirements for equivalency with other statewide locations. Represent Undergraduate Medical Education on the AUWAMG Board and the appropriate contracted affiliated academic institution committees. Function as the liaison between Aurora Health Care and teaching institutions.
  • Negotiate capacity for students with faculty and administration. Allocate resources appropriately according to teaching needs and volumes. Make arrangements for any contractual necessities for student education.
  • Develop, implement and monitor the budget for medical student education, including faculty compensation, housing/food costs, capital resources, etc. Maintain responsibility for meeting budget expectations.
  • Serve as a resource for planning, problem solving, and evaluation. Develop and implement an overall plan for programmatic evaluations linked to AHC and AUWMG strategic plans and goals, in conjunction with the contracted affiliated academic clerkship leaders.
  • Ensure active recruitment of high-quality preceptors and faculty into teaching roles and ensure the development, recognition and retention of current teachers and residents/fellows as teachers. Advocate for medical student training within departments, AUWAMG, and Aurora-affiliated medical groups, including adequate compensation for time spent in teaching students, inclusion of student teaching evaluations in annual assessments, and recognition of faculty for outstanding teaching.
  • Ensure monitoring of student duty hours and work environment. Develop and oversee policies to promote consistent processes for providing and scheduling all clinical training within AHC, ensuring that training experiences for learners from other disciplines do not negatively impact medical student teaching within AHC, and that students of affiliated institutions are given priority.
  • Develop, monitor, review and present to faculty leaders and AUWAMG Board appropriate assessment measures of medical student training, including student evaluation of experiences, recruitment of student learners as residents, demand for elective rotations at AHC sites, and faculty and preceptor satisfaction. Actively work with AHC administration to maintain ongoing affiliations as well as recruit new teaching sites and affiliates.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
  • Medicine and Surgery, MD-DO license issued by the state in which the team member practices.

Education Required:
  • Doctorate Degree in Medicine.

Experience Required:
  • Typically requires 5 years of experience in academic medicine. Minimum five yrs experience as a practicing physician.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Certification by specialty board or appropriate equivalent educational qualifications; maintenance of certification requirements must be met throughout one's tenure in this position.
  • An appointment in good standing and active clinical privileges on the medical staff of the applicable Aurora Health Care facility.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of current trends in health care delivery and medical education.
  • Advanced business knowledge and understanding
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent skills in problem solving, conflict resolution, negotiation and diplomacy.
  • The ability to work cohesively with physicians, community leaders and board of directors.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Will generally be exposed to a normal office environment.
  • The position requires travel so will be exposed to weather and road conditions.
  • May be exposed to human blood and body fluids; therefore, must wear protective clothing as required.
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical and explosive hazards.
  • Must have functional speech, vision, smell, touch and hearing.
  • Must be able to operate all equipment essential in performing the job.
