Job Description

Nursing Assistant / Orderly: Provides direct and indirect patient care under the direction and supervision of a RN or physician. Assists patients with activities of daily living, provides for personal care, provides emotional support and performs clinical skills under the direction of a RN. Understands and supports MMC Mission, Vision and Values, the principles and activities of True North, and organizational goals.

Health Unit Coordinator: Completes secretarial / clerical work as assigned. Understands and supports MMC Mission, Vision and Values, the principles and activities of True North, and organizational goals.

  • Prepares patient medical records for admissions, transfers, and discharge.
  • Notifies appropriate nursing staff to assist patients/physicians in the care of the patient. Notifies RN of new and/or stat orders. Is accurate with transcription orders. Enters and verifies data in the computer system.
  • Orders supplies as needed. Maintains supplies in a neat and orderly environment.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family. Defers to the RN to provide explanations and verbal reassurance as appropriate.
  • Answers telephone/patient call system in a polite manner. Communicates information to the appropriate personnel/family.
  • Provides care appropriate to condition, age and ability, the psychosocial and physical needs of patient, including adult, pediatric, geriatric and the general patient population within the C.N.A.’s scope of practice and hospital policy.
  • Assists with patient admissions, discharge and transfers.
  • Provides patient care which may include bed bath, shower, tub bath, oral hygiene, combing hair, back care, dressing patients, changing bed linen, cleaning over bed table and bedside stand, straightening room and other general care as necessary throughout the shift.
  • Provides general nursing care such as positioning patients, lifting and turning patients, applying/utilizing special equipment, assisting in use of bedpan or commode and ambulating patients.
  • Prepares patients for meals; services and removes food trays and assists with meals or feeds patients if necessary. Distributes drinking water and snacks to patients as applicable. Documents meal percentages and appetite.
  • Answers patient’s call lights, anticipates patients’ needs and makes regular rounds of assigned patients. Makes rounds at least once an hour when possible.
  • Maintains equipment, utility areas and support areas in a clean and neat environment.
  • Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, blood pressure, intake-output, oxygen saturation percentage and reports to RN.
  • Performs bedside blood glucose (point-of care-test) and transfers result into EMR.
  • Reports patient complaint of pain to RN.
  • Observes patient’s mental and physical conditions, reports any changes to RN.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to RNs, staff members, medical staff and other providers.
  • Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.
  • Documentation meets current standards and policies
  • Treats patient and families with respect and dignity.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be flexible & organized. Is able to function under stressful situations.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Uses proper body mechanics
  • Orients new employees when necessary.
  • Responds promptly to changes in workload, adjusting assignments as necessary to achieve optimal productivity, efficiency and fiscal responsibility.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Nursing Assistant is considered female and Orderly is considered male. Gender selection for role modeling and therapeutic needs (in the behavioral health setting) and for the privacy right of patients in all patient care areas to have a caregiver of the same gender available to assist with activities such as bathing, toileting and disrobing.
  • Nursing Assistants are to be listed on the Wisconsin Nurse Aide Registry
  • Health Unit Coordinators medical secretary training or one year equivalent experience, preferably in a healthcare setting, is desirable. Requires strong knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Must possess basic computer knowledge and use of hospital software to function within assigned role.
  • Must be proficient within three months of entry into the position
  • Must have legible penmanship.
  • Must be able to spell accurately.
  • Must be able to follow orders precisely and keep accurate records.
  • Must be able to speak the English language and write in an understandable manner.
  • Must be competent to serve specific patient populations served.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Basic Life Support

Shift Time: 8- and 12-hour shifts
