The Maintenance/ Driver position will perform maintenance and janitorial duties within all Salvation Army facilities and its grounds. Makes regular, seasonal, and special pickups of donations. (Average allocation of time: 50%-60% maintenance, janitorial and 50%-40% driving duties.)

Maintenance/Janitorial Tasks

  • Performs daily checks of major appliances to assure they are all in good working order. Changes light bulbs as needed. Checks on reported malfunctions of appliances, equipment, plumbing, and electricity, heating and cooling at the community center; makes minor repairs if possible. If necessary, promptly contacts appropriate vendor to make repairs.
  • Performs daily cleaning tasks at community center to include sweeping and mopping all tile floors, spot cleaning bathrooms and supplying with toilet paper and paper towels, and trash removal throughout the building, including offices. Thoroughly cleans bathrooms and vacuums all carpeting as needed. Regularly cleans windows and glass doors.
  • Schedules regular maintenance of company vehicles (truck, vans and emergency canteen), to include regular oil changes and other required annual or semi-annual routine maintenance. Provides for other vehicle repairs as needed. Ensures company vehicles are adequately fueled.
  • Schedules annual maintenance and necessary repairs on facility boilers and air conditioning, lawn mower and snow blower.
  • Trains, assigns work, and supervises volunteers assigned to the department.
  • Removes snow from sidewalks and walkways in front and around the sides of all facilities, as well as the common area behind the shelter.
  • Performs general landscaping duties at the community center to include mowing lawn, trimming hedges, pulling weeds, and watering plants, flowers, and grass. Oversees volunteers who plant flowers and maintain flowerbeds.
  • Purchases parts and supplies needed for maintenance with approval of corps officer.
  • Ensures adequate protection of building and grounds from flooding, giving special attention to flood-prone areas.
  • Checks and cleans gutters on a regular basis.
  • Keeps garage, storage shed and other storage areas clean and organized for their intended purpose.
  • Cleans up broken glass or spilled liquid from floor, parking lot, and other areas within facilities and grounds in a timely, safe manner.

Driving Duties

  • Picks up bakery and bread donations in accordance with established schedule.
  • Picks up regular food donations from local restaurants and institutions.
  • Picks up other donated or purchased items as directed. This includes but is not limited to regular pick-ups from Russ Davis (and other regular donors) and special pick-ups from other Salvation Army locations.
  • Performs specific pickup and delivery tasks to support seasonal events such as Coats for Kids, Toys for Tots, Red Kettle Campaign, and the Christmas and Thanksgiving programs.
  • Delivers items that are picked up to assigned locations.

Education: High School diploma or equivalent

Experience: One-year facility maintenance experience preferred

Certifications: Valid Wisconsin Driver's license, with clearance to drive from The Salvation Army's insurance carrier.
