Job Summary:

This position functions under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager of the Environmental Health Division Organic Chemistry section. The position has responsibilities, which include sample testing for a variety or Organic Components that may include PCB Aroclors, PCB Congeners, Pesticides, PBDEs, TOC and more. This position is responsible for independently preparing and analyzing environmental samples from the following matrices: Water, Soil/Sediment, Tissue, Serum and more. This position also works with team members in shared analytical spaces and on instrumentation. This position may also require the candidate to participate in the rough grinding process of whole fish which includes: scaling, filleting, and grinding a homogeneous portion for analysis in the lab.

The successful candidate will perform routine analysis on Organic environmental samples with minimal supervision after a training period. Work in the laboratory involves the operation and maintenance of various instrumentation. Personal initiative, independence, strong technical skills, and collaboration are essential in this role.

The employee in this position is expected to use the tools and principles of quality management in performing their daily work including the following: Demonstrate exceptional customer service by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with managers, supervisor, coworkers, and all customers. Provide constructive feedback for the purpose of continuous improvement in a manner that is supportive of the State Laboratory of Hygiene and its mission. Use data collection tools as appropriate. Use effective team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit. Present ideas, carry out assignments, and provide information as required. Participate in continuous learning through professional development activities.

Primary work hours are 7:45 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Monday through Friday.

Required
Bachelor's Degree

Qualifications:

For the Chem I: Chemistry college-level laboratory course work required. Analytical laboratory experience preferred.

For the Chem II: Science college-level laboratory course work required. Two -Three years analytical laboratory experience required.
5+ years analytical laboratory experience preferred.
Previous experience working in an environmental laboratory setting is highly desired.
Experience with GC/ECD IC instrumentation preferred.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Minimum salary below - actual salary is to be determined upon hire and dependent on qualifications:
Chemist I: Minimum $52,000/year
Chemist II: Minimum $55,000/year
