About the Job

The Minnesota Nano Center (a unit of the College of Science and Engineering) consists of two nanofabrication cleanrooms and several laboratories. The Laboratory Maintenance Engineer is an Electromechanical Systems Specialist who works as part of a maintenance engineering team to install, maintain, and repair semiconductor processing equipment. This position requires experience in vacuum technology, equipment schematics, troubleshooting mechanical systems, facilities, and working with hand tools and test instruments. This position works closely with and is supervised by the Associate Director of Laboratory Operations.

Position Responsibilities:

Cleanroom and Laboratory System Maintenance (75%)

  • Keep assigned equipment in good operating order
  • Perform routine and emergency maintenance
  • Provide routine equipment characterization
  • Install and remove equipment as necessary
  • Establish maintenance plans and procedures
  • Cross-train for maintaining other equipment as assigned
  • Ordering/stocking parts


Facilities Liaison (20%)

  • Support cleanroom and laboratory facilities
  • Maintain regular communication with University facilities personnel assigned to the Minnesota Nano Center

Other duties (5%)

  • Participate in lab cleaning and hazardous waste disposal activities as needed
  • Assist other staff as needed
  • Attend staff meetings


Hiring salary range is $31.08 - $38.84 / hour ($64,646 - $80,787 annually) and is dependent upon the selected candidate's relevant qualifications and work experience.

Qualifications

Completion of a two-year technical school program related to electrical or mechanical systems plus a minimum of four years of relevant work experience in instrument/equipment support and repair, or a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering (or degree in an adjacent STEM field), and one year of relevant work experience in instrument/equipment support and repair. Equivalent combinations of academic and work experience in a related field may be substituted for the degree.

Relevant work experience includes a familiarity with at least some of the following technical areas:

  • Vacuum (and high vacuum) systems
  • Plasma systems
  • Gas handling equipment
  • Automation & control
  • Electrical/mechanical systems
About the Department

The Minnesota Nano Center's mission is to support the fabrication, synthesis, and characterization of nanoscale devices and materials for both academic and industrial users. We do this by maintaining state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities, a full tool set for microfabrication, and core labs for research into nanomaterials and biological applications of nanoscience.
