Overview

Under general direction, support the design of tools, dies, gauges, fixtures, and equipment. Prepare clear, complete and accurate detail drawings from rough sketches, drawings, notes or electronic files using drafting (CAD) system.

Responsibilities
    Provide all necessary support to meet corporate safety goals and maintain a safe working environment for all MEC associates.
  1. Coordinate tooling development and ordering process
    • Create initial draft customer proofs
    • Participate in APQP meetings
    • Finalize drawing - customer approvals
    • Work with die makers on quotes - submit information to Purchasing to order dies
    • Review and approval from die maker, maintain records

  6. Responsible for ballooning part and profile drawings
  7. Work with MSA associates to estimate, design, detail, troubleshoot and improve fixtures, tools, dies, components, gages and equipment used in the manufacturing of extruded products. Identify best manufacturing methods, ergonomics, poke-yokes, part stability, secure work holding, exposed surfaces, and overall part quality.
  8. From designs & sketches, create and update 3D models, assembles and detail drawings of fixtures, tools, dies, components, gages and equipment on CAD system, check dimensioning of parts, relationships of one part to another and adding relationship of various parts to whole assembly or project.
  9. Maintain files and related documentation for blueprints of parts, revisions, floor layouts and other related projects.
  10. Process ECNs to update, change or modify process or tooling documentation. Verify that ECNs are coordinated with production.
  11. Review the design and geometry of quoted and existing parts for inconsistencies relative to MEC manufacturing processes.
  12. Design and create solid models and set-up sheets for CNC, CMM, and punch presses.
  13. Responsible for use, implementation/integration and troubleshooting of CADD software, modifying as necessary, including programming in software supplied languages and creates and maintains databases and forms for use between the document management system and the CADD software.
  14. Assist in the training of associates involved in use of SolidWorks / CADD systems
  15. Utilize knowledge of various machines, engineering practices, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (G.D.&T.) dimensioning, mathematics, and other physical sciences to complete drawings.
  16. Create & update profile drawing. During the creation and updates, review for missing dimensions, tolerance issues and geometry errors, add MEC quality badges and runout surfaces.
  17. Understand the calculation, application and MEC's capabilities regarding the Aluminum Association standard tolerances.
  18. Support the NPQP and new extrusion die order process.
  19. Coordinate and/or support special projects and assignment as required for internal technical projects for safety, process improvement, plant, and equipment layout, etc.
  20. Support the quoting process by reviewing existing tooling, downloading drawings, and providing profile data.
  21. Review Customer revisions of profile and parts to determine the effects on tooling and processes at MEC. Once determined, work with the MEC team to define and carry out any updates necessary.
  22. Create and update visual aid, visual work instructions, customer part drawings, item master information, SRO'S and cosmetic inspection sheets.
  23. Continue to expand tooling knowledge, doing any research necessary to find new, innovative ways to fixture parts. Work with engineers to improve methods to manufacture quality parts at the lowest possible cost.
  24. Reverse engineer tooling, equipment, parts, and components not in CADD software throughout the facility.
  25. Assist Manufacturing Engineer's in new cell design & layout, including necessary tooling for milling/punching machines, infeed/outfeed, robot grippers, etc.
  26. Design tooling with hydraulics and pneumatics to efficiently hold parts with high yield. Create assembly drawing with plumbing and accessories included.
  27. During the design process, coordinate design review meetings for new tooling to ensure all required inputs are met, attend all process review meetings, and make updates to design as needed.
  28. Supply design support to all areas of manufacturing including, but not limited to part orientation for heat treat, sawing and packing, anodizing rack design, and process poke-yokes.
  29. Design special packaging for custom jobs.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience and Certifications and Licenses
Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school in Mechanical Design, Tool & Die Design, and three to five years related experience in fixture, die, gauge, and equipment experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. SolidWorks experience preferred, however any CADD experience is necessary


Skills and Abilities

  • Possess organizational skills necessary for record keeping, follow through, etc. as well as ability to institute timely, innovative thinking and actions, often necessary when meeting company commitments.
  • Ability to read, create and interpret specifications for new and rework tooling.
  • Ability to interpret customer product and quality requirements. Use measurement equipment to measure and verify parts.
  • Possess strong computer skills including CADD. Working knowledge of personal computers, spread sheets, and word processing applications.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact effectively with diverse personalities and individuals at various levels within and outside the organization. Ability to establish and maintain effective working and public relations, advocating team concept and participative management style.
  • Possess good mechanical aptitude.
