  • Evaluates and determines the acceptance of new business as guided by NFIP rules and regulations.
  • Including more complex accounts as experience warrants i.e. Master Residential Condominium policies, Applies manual rating to non-compliant post FIRM structures on new business as well as the renewal terms per NFIP guidelines.
  • Properly review and apply elevation certificates and replacement cost evaluations on necessary risks per FEMA's regulations and guidelines.
  • Utilizes the online underwriting system to ensure adequate pricing of individual risks through proper classification, accuracy of information, and adherence to NFIP underwriting standards and guidelines.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of how the system applies data entered to rate a policy correctly.
  • Routinely test the system through manual rating of more complex risks to ensure that the system is rating and functioning properly.
  • Work with manager and/or supervisor as well as system vendor to test and validate programmatic changes.
  • Administer and monitor FEMAs underwriting rules, guidelines, and regulations and rating manuals.
  • Responsible for applying knowledge of FEMA underwriting guidelines and Selective's processing standards to the issuance of personal and commercial elevated and A-Zone rated flood policies.
  • Apply and share knowledge with agents on a regular basis.
  • Responsible for servicing agents in an assigned region/territory as well as internal customers.
  • Ensures and maintains effective, professional and timely communication with agents through telephone, written correspondence or agent visits.
  • Reviews and takes appropriate action on underwriting issues where additional information is needed from either the insured or agent.
  • Must effectively and professionally communicate documentation and other underwriting requirements of FEMA regulations to agents and other members of the underwriting team.
  • Work with Territory Managers in assigned regions/territories to ensure the agency experience is positive and look for opportunities to move business to Selective.
  • Responsible for managing the day to day work assigned.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Prior underwriting experience required.
  • Flood knowledge a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the commitment to work successfully in a team environment and foster teamwork.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Exceptional customer relations skills to support strong customer service focus.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and maintain the necessary attention to detail.
  • Organizational and planning skills. Problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent PC skills Preferred: Office automation/keyboarding.
  • College degree preferred.

  • 2+ years of Underwriting experience required.

  • Customer service experience a plus

  • Must be able to work 9:00 -5:00 pm EST.
  • Bilingual Spanish required.

The expected starting salary range for this role is$54,000 - $77,000. The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.
