Job Summary:

This position is responsible for operating field equipment, performing field operations, vehicle and equipment maintenance, dairy facility maintenance, and manure system maintenance. This position will occasionally work on maintenance projects in the dairy facilities, will delegate work to staff, work with USDA repair personnel, interact with researchers, tracking and maintaining records (preventative maintenance, field, equipment inventory, financial) and other office work, and will work on projects as part of a team. Aptitude for skills such as mechanics, basic plumbing and electrical, and fabrication are necessary. General knowledge of field operations and crop production are also critical. This position is also required to maintain a valid commercial driver's license or have the ability to obtain one within a year. This position will occasionally be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities: Directs unit operations, may supervise and train agricultural staff, and operates equipment to maintain institutional agriculture in support of the institution's teaching, research, and outreach mission.
  • 30% Monitors and directs daily operations of research, field activities, and agricultural practices to ensure alignment with strategic goals and unit objectives
  • 20% May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
  • 15% Operates, cleans, and repairs basic and complex agricultural machines and equipment to ensure safety and operable functionality and to adhere to established rules, policies, and regulations
  • 15% Coordinates repair of major or specialized equipment
  • 5% Participates in MARS program management, meeting routinely with management team to address issues pertaining to staffing, budgets, capital needs, and livestock forage production operations.
  • 5% Direct the maintenance, modification, upgrades, and replacement of all station infrastructure including buildings and roads, and work with the management team to determine priority
  • 10% Interacts and communicates with vendors to acquire bids, quotes, and specifications for commodity purchases and equipment purchases adhering to approved policies of the UW and USDA

Education:

Preferred
H.S. Diploma

Qualifications:

-Experience in equipment operation to include specialized harvest equipment such as combine, bagger, forage harvester etc. preferred
-Experience in fabrication, plumbing, electrical, mechanics, etc. preferred
-Experience in crop production such as forage management, field spraying, soil sampling, managing crop production for soil health, and nutrient management preferred
-Candidate has experience with tracking expenses, inventory, farm records, and maintenance logs
-Basic knowledge with Microsoft office
-Background in management or supervision
-Hands on experience in livestock production

License/Certification:

Preferred
Pesticide Applicator - State Licensure
Ability to obtain within a year

Preferred
CDL - Commercial Drivers License
Ability to obtain within a year

Work Schedule:

Normal hours are 7:30am - 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. Position may be on call some holiday, weekends, and other times outside of normal work hours.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
