Gundersen Health System has an MLT/MLS/CLS opening in our Referral Lab. ASCP certification is not required!

What You'll Do:

The Referral Laboratory department handles all specimens that must be sent to another institution for testing. This includes completing any referral laboratory-specific test request forms, processing of the sample according to the instructions of the testing facility, packaging for transport, and uploading of results to the patient lab results. Additionally, this area insures that the referral laboratory being used is credentialed by CLIA, CMS, and/or CAP as a measure of the quality of testing performed. You will analyze information, monitor quality performance, and take action to ensure the efficient delivery of accurate and timely laboratory test results and services. This position will also be responsible for the development and implementation of laboratory procedures, as well as the maintenance of quality control in the laboratory understanding the requirements and standards of regulating agencies to ensure compliance within the laboratory.

What's Available:

  • Part-time - 64 hours biweekly (0.8 FTE); will orientate fulltime

  • 8hr days with Saturday rotation

  • Starting pay of $20.22 and up based on your years of experience

  • Applicable weekend differentials

What You'll Need:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or Clinical Laboratory Science

  • ASCP Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Certification is preferred but not required

  • Proficiency in laboratory techniques and procedures, processing, and quality assurance

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work with precision

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot technical issues

Job Description:

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) collects and processes specimens following standard procedures, reducing pre-analytical variables and ensuring high quality specimens are used for laboratory testing. Demonstrates competency with a limited scope of laboratory procedures, chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic as well as electrocardiogram and spirometry testing. Monitors quality control information and follows performance guidelines to ensure the efficient delivery of accurate and timely laboratory test results and services. Complies with the requirements and standards of regulating agencies. Actively seeks opportunities to stay up-to-date with information relevant to the section(s).

Major Responsibilities:
1. Responsible for the collection of blood specimens for laboratory testing by venipuncture or skin puncture. Follows established procedures to accurately identify and label all specimens. Processes specimens following established procedures, reducing the likelihood for introduction of pre-analytical variation.
2. Responsible for achieving and maintaining competence in performing automated and non-automated laboratory testing as demonstrated by departmental skills rosters. Recognizes unexpected test results and adheres to guidelines to take appropriate action. Identifies pre-, post-, and analytical problems and seeks support to resolve in a timely and efficient manner.
3. Reviews pending workload while adjusting to fluctuating pace and demand for lab services. Plans and prioritizes workload to best ensure delivery of high quality laboratory test results in an accurate and timely manner.
4. Monitors Quality Control and variance reports are within acceptable performance standards. Distinguishes clinically significant shifts and trends and follows established laboratory guidelines for appropriate corrective action to resolve technical, instrument, pre-analytical and post-analytical problems.
5. Understands the flow of laboratory data and information via laboratory information system and electronic health records. Follows standard downtime procedures during times of system failure to ensure laboratory data continues to be delivered in an accurate and timely manner.
6. Performs other job-related responsibilities as requested.

Education and Learning:
REQUIRED
Associate degree in Medical Lab Technician (MLT) or Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS)
A copy of the applicant's/employee's diploma and/or transcript as confirmation of the education requirement must be provided at time of hire.
